Is replacing speakers in a cab a diy project?

I want to put some v30's in my VHT 4x12 cab that I used for a few years gigging. I've never done it before, but it seems like it would be straight-forward...unscrew old speakers..connect new ones the same and screw in. Is there more to it than that or am I safe doin it myself?

thanks,
Steve

That - and a dab of solder is about it.

Make sure you get the proper ohms.

This may sound completely idiotic but once you've felt the ease with which a screwdriver goes though a Celestion Vintage you'll hit yourself for not doing it: always put a piece of over the speaker when you use the screwdriver on the screws - SHOULD your screwdriver slip it won't immediately go though the cone...

Other than that: What bassmac said. And also: if you can do the first test of your replacement job on a solid state amp this might be a good idea. Should something have gone wrong in d.i.y.-land you won't fry your '69 Plexi or whatever it is you use

A bit of personal history: choose your screwdriver carefully!

Many years ago, I was swapping the speakers out in a cab, putting an old EV SRO into a 112 cab...using a power screwdriver made it go pretty fast, until I was momentarily distracted, causing me to strip the head completely out on one of the screws...

That speaker is still in the cab...

Using a dull screwdriver can also cause the tip to slip out of the slot (this is starting to sound pretty kinky)... I punched a hole in more than one speaker like this, which can be bad when you're dealing with 40+ year old Jensens...

Swapping speakers is a good DIY project, though...always cool to hear the differences....

You can do it yourself, just pick speakers that are the same ohmage and go very very slowly. Beware of the force.

Magnetic force that is.

I've checked a couple places and v 30's were going for bout $110 apiece. Does that sound about right to you guys or are there better deals to be had for new ones?

thx,
Steve

Have you tried using needle nose pliers or a robo wrench to remove the stripped screw? You can also drill through the entire screw and speaker mount.

Or try the Craftsman 3-pc. Screw-Out™ damaged screw remover set $20 at Sears.

I've got a 4X12 Marshall cab sitting here doing nothing. Is there any reason I couldn't replace 3 of the speakers with different types/brands (assuming they are the correct ohm and wattage) so that I could have 4 different flavors to choose from when micing? Anybody ever try this? Wouldn't use it for live, just recording.

I have a 2x12 with a Greenback and a V30 in it - sounds cool. As long as you have the ohms correct - there's no rules.
