Best sounding room I ever worked in was the A room at Transcontinential Studios. Bob Hodas was involved. If you want a great sounding room, get George Augspurger to design it.

I might be mistaken, but I was under the impression that *all* the guys you've named are going to want to spec the monitors as well as the room design.

Eden Studio Two is one of the best London mix rooms I've worked in, It translates superbly, and mixes like butter! http://www.edenstudios.com/studio2.htm |

Three Hidley rooms. Westlake Studio A. Love it. Westlake Studio B- Not bad. The old Hidley designed Osmond room. Killer. Studio Bauton- Studio X in Seattle, Counterpoint Studios in Salt Lake, The A room is great and my C room is really tight Rooms that I have hated? Most Carl Yancher Wavespace rooms. They don't sound great and they have never translated for me. Russ Berger rooms are just fantastic and really fun to work in. Michael Greene |

this blackmer rooms are impressive! maybe someone can answer this: do this people design such rooms mostly by math or is this more experience and "trial and error" to find such design-ideas? i could not imagine someone can realy handle such mathematicly complex things like diffusion (thinking about this nice blackmer-diffusors). and most of this guys started to build rooms in the 60ties-70ties when computing-power was far behind....and when you can make it by math, will this mean it sounds good?

From experience I've liked rooms by: Russ Berger Vincent Van Haaf Tom Hidley There are several other designers that are good too, and whose rooms have performed well for me, but these are the ones whose rooms seemed a cut above. There are also a couple big guys whose rooms I've not worked in yet, and a couple who seem to be hit or miss. Based on all of this, what I'm trying to say is YMMV, and this list is certainly not complete. |

Mike, Didn't Bob tune the room or something (t-con)? I could have sworn he was involved with it. I know the studios tech, Neils, was also involved. |

Massenburg's room at Blackbird - very, very accurate. Russ Berger's rooms are quite serviceable as well - some of my favorites.

My Old Room (just kidding) I'm a lurker with no cred but... I used to work here... http://www.inthepocketstudio.com Chips Davis cleaned up the design (after our abortive start) and tweaked the systems. I never had to guess when I mixed there. What I heard is what I got (in the car, at home, at the client's place, etc) Last edited by andsonic; 7th February 2007 at 09:52 PM.. Reason: typo |

I should also add that Russ Berger is very very much the same kind of person. He is a true gentleman and very very concerned about the feel, vibe and functionality of the room. He won't compromise but he will find ways to make your budget work. I spoke with him over the course of a number of days about a project I was involved in and I walked away totally blow away by the fact the he "Just gets It". He has no ego and is a true, kind texan, who loves to talk about design, great wine, and great food. Studio Bauton is another company that really cares about what their clients want and design really beautiful rooms with great sound and a really really great functionality. They also can do truly incredible work for all budget ranges from big to small. The bass in my Studio Bauton mix room is tighter than I could have ever imagined. My mix room is not very big and that makes bass harder to deal with but they nailed it perfect. A great accomplishment. I wish after talking and working with some other designers I could say I felt the same way. I have found a lot of ego in other designers and it shows in how their rooms sound and mostly in how their rooms work and are to work in. Who do you want to trust with your money? Design is not something that you can just rip out and do over with little expense. Research everyone you can and don't buy into any hype or ego. There are to many great designers to have to deal with an egotistical prick.... Michael Greene
