Chinese Ribbon sounded better then the Royer 122!

: sending the 122 back after a big disappointment on elec gtr. trks
was led to belive it was the dogs boll~~ on loud gtr's, did an A:B with a cheap chinese rb500 ribbon and it sounded fuller smoother and warmer, the royer really did'nt do anything i was lead to belive before i bought it, maybe it sounds good as an overhead or acoustic but loud electrics, was very let down...

Well, I found exactly the same thing in my review of the RB-500 but for some reason my post has been moved to the children´s section by a high end moderator.

Maybe 100 Euro are not high end ?
I ensure you I used that mic with a 12.000 Euro chain (cs spider into Massive Passive into STC-8)...

I feel we´ll get some serious spank for our findings on the t-bone and the royer.

It's a T-Bone RB500 sold at www.thomann.de for £73 UKP ($150 USD).

He's right about it sounding better than the Royer on guitar - I prefer it over the 121 on guitar cab.

I'm not saying the Royer is a bad mic - it's excellent and nicely detailed. But if you want meat and punch on rock/metal guitar then the T-Bone smokes it.

There are a few threads on this over on Low End Theory with plenty of sound files.

OK everyone, flame away.

Here's the thing. I think the 121 IS da bomb.

So far, it looks like people who never much liked it, like something else. Surprise?

It's all personal taste/opinion. I love Royers. To me they rule the planet on guit amps.

Hey, I have both - I think the Royer is a great mic. So what if a cheaper mic sounds better for a particular application. No-one's hating on it.

so can anyone recommend another ribbon?

the signal chain was:
strat:ac30:liquid channel:rosetta 800:nuendo

the shock was i bought the t bone rb 500, just see what it sounded like and was so blown away by it, so then i thought if i buy a royer 122 its gonna smoke it, as its one of the flagship ribbons around, it was such a disappointing day, i tell ya!
i actually thought it was broke, and it wasn't been stressed either as i know (that) sound, just sounded pretty bad for such an expensive piece of kit.

so my question is can anyone recommend another ribbon for elec gtr tracking, it surely cant be the case that a 100 euro mic sounds better then the real deal ribbons, also if anyone can point me in the direction of a good pre-amp to match>

thanks again.

I haven't used this mic personally, but I heard it demoed at TapOpCon last summer on a Tele through a Fender Twin Reverb compared to a Royer R121...the Crowley and Tripp Naked Eye. From what I heard coming out of the monitors in the room I thought it was nicer sounding and warranted further inquiry.

I personally use my Shiny Box 46 on distorted guitars with much success over my R121's all the time.

I got a 122 originally a while back and couldn't get a sound of it that I was happy with. Luckily I was going to be in LA the following day and went to Royer to meet with the guys and they swapped me out for a 121. Got an amazing sound within minutes and haven't looked back since. One of the comments that was made in that meeting was "either you're a 122 guy or 121 guy".

i very much agree with this -- tried both, sent the 122 back, and use the 121 substantially on almost every project we do...

Hi,

Though I didn´t´hear it yet this one looks very interesting:

Sontronics Sigma

You can use every kind of preamp, clean & coloured ones.
You´ll need at least 50 db of gain for most ribbons.

I have three of them here in the mic coffin that rarely see the light of day. I use the 122 and my R84s everytime I'm in the studio. It did OK for me outside a kick drum. That's the only place I've found that I liked it. Plus it allowed me to use the 122 (which I like better in that app. somewhere else).

Mine are RSM 2s.
