Gooey compressor purchase- need help..

Hey everyone!
So I'm planning on buying a new compressor to fill out the collection in the next few days..
I've got:

Manley vari mu
(2) LA4 (vintage)
(4) dbx160xt
(2) EL8X
a few other dbx, dramer, and a bunch of plugs

I'm recording with either a MM1200 or a PTHD system with 192's.

I'm looking for a "character" compressor that sounds like it's doing something "gooey" even when it not really compressing. Something that is blatant when it is in the chain.
budget is +/- $2600

I'm mainly recording rock(ish) bands in the likeness of Catherine Wheel, Death Cab for Cutie(love the tones on the new record), Shoegaze type stuff, wolfmother, ect.. you get the idea.

I'm really stuck on either:
Retro Instruments GatesStaLevel
UA 1176 (maybe a pair)

Is there something I'm overlooking...

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

ERic

Yup, I got the reissue. It should be here on the 1st and I'll get to try it out a ton during an all day session the 3rd!
I can't wait to put it through it's paces.. As far as I know there are not a ton of them out there. I'll keep you posted on the results.

I know..

Maybe I'll post audio examples of before and after..

I bet then folks come out of the woodwork

yea,
I checked the zener limiter out that you suggested, but I have a feeling it's going to be a bit out of my budget for the moment. Talk about drool....

I hope your planning on writting a review once you get it!

I too am very much interested in the Retro unit...was there much of a lead time to get one delivered?

I'm looking to add one great all around tracking compressor that can cover vox, bass, electric and acoustic guitars. Contrary to popular practice, I'm not a big fan of compressing in the box...I would much rather have a compressor that I can use heavily during tracking. From what I gather, this thing can be used heavily without nasty side effects...

Very anxious to hear your review...

When I ordered mine from Vintage King they had them in stock. I'm told this is not always the case, but I guess I got lucky

I wouldn't call it a great all around compressor. What it does it does well but its not always the right sound for a given situation. Also its output is really hot. You can actually use it as a mic pre for a dynamic mic. And lastly you don't have any controls for modifying the envelope.

If you want a great all around tracking comp look into a CL1B and change the tubes.

I'd keep the Drawmer as an effect thing and look into getting an old tube limiter.

Eric,
Thanks for posting the pics...that thing is beautiful I'm still in the market and very much looking forward to your review.

Also, I just checked out your myspace page...phenomenal sounding recordings! Would love to hear more about your signal chain.

Thanks,
Chris
