Question 6" Monitors Under $3000

These are the worthy contenders I've found. Lets hear your comments and thoughts.

ADAM S1a
ADAM P11a
Blue Sky 2.1
Dynaudio BM6a
Dynaudio AIR 6.5
Earthworks Sigma
Genelec 1030a

My space is kinda small (12x15), but well treated. The 8" Event Tuned Reference monitors (tuned to what I ask ) I'm using as a stopgap supply plenty of unwanted boominess, yet also harsh and peaky highs at the same time.

My mixes have been sounding rather shy in the 3-6k range do to this monitor's peakiness - they have to go!

I've heard the Bluesky can sound "sharp" also, and this may be unwanted in my situation but you never know till you get em in the room. Also another consideration - I usually choose to mix without a sub but may need one to back up a pair of sixers if they aren't telling me whats happening below 60hz.

So, thoughts on subs and recommendations would be super.

You're in Brooklyn right? Call Dale and make an appointment in the their demo room. Go and listen to the things for yourself. Bring CD's you know the sound of and bring some stuff that's you've worked on. My sampler was filled with stuff that I knew was too bright or bottom heavy, the mixes that make me realize I suck and some of my own rough mixes and mastered final mixes. Make sure you spend some time there, at least two hours and make notes as you go. Even if I hadn't bought a new set of monitors I walked away with lots of info that helped me with my current setup.

Jay,

Thanks for the tip on Dale. I've never been there as anytime I contact them on a price, John at Muzeekworld just blows them away... without factoring in the 8.25% sales tax.

I have a good relationship with Steve Strassberg of Strassberg Associates, but his place seems to cater to the broadcast crowd.
Its not acoustically treated and not at all set up to do a monitor shoot out. What I really want to know is - how are they going to sound in MY room? Impossible till you install them.

Does Dale have a decent acoustic space? Will they set up 2-3 pairs of monitors at a time or do they just have a "screw the sweetspot", 20 monitors lined up in row type of approach.

Its not clear they carry Earthworks Sigma 6.2s, which I'm really interested in. I'll give a call tomorrow and see what they say.

I bought the Dynaudio BM6a:s a few weeks ago. .....Not a bad word to say about them. I think they are really good nearfields. A bit more gentle to your ears than the Genelecs (1030 or 1031). Thatīs an aspect i like about them..........because of the d#Īn long workinghours you always have to put in..... I A/B them against the Genelecs.

I've had my Blue Sky's for about a month or so and don't think they're "sharp" at all... I would describe them as "airy" and detailed in a smooth and pleasant way.

Strassberg Associates is where I got my 2.1's. After talking with Pascal over at Blue Sky about demoing the 2.1's he put me in touch with Steve. I found him to be a real nice guy and very reasonable as well. I would certainly do biz with him again. I've never been in their demo room but Steve was real accommodating in setting me up with a system to check out here at my place.

I wasn't sure the "sub" thing was going to work out for me but I'm real pleased with how it sounds. I posted a few quick thoughts on the 2.1's here if you're interested.

Do you want price or do you want service? I ALWAYS go for service. If I'm about to drop $3K or whatever another $100 or so for someone who went either above and beyond or just answer questions without giving me a runaround is worth it. Besides if there's a problem I know it will be taken care of without a lot of crap.

When I was at Dale they did have Earthworks monitors there but I didn't listen to them. It's more of the 20 monitors in a row deal but they're at least level matched and switched with a Coleman box. The guy I spoke to was Dan Ross and he was most excellent and all too patient with me.
