Problem with my Sony c800g

I just got this new and after 5-10 mins of having turned the mic on, i get a faint hum (sounds like a ground hum) but the hum gets louder over the next ten minutes untill its a very loud square wave sounding hum.

Initially i thought it was a grounding problem with the power supply, but having noticed that the hum gets louder would lead me to think its a capacitor holding current? or a bad rectifier maybe something like that anyway.

When i turned off the power supply and turn it back on again, the buzz is completely gone.

either way, i called the retailer and they informed me that it would be hard to trade it out for a new one as sony have stopped production on the mic due to a rare metal or something and something else about homeland security not allowing this material into the country anymore. so they said they can have it fixed for no charge but i would have to go a week without my mic and i'm tracking every day.

my path is into avalon 737 > Neve 1073 > ad16x

but ive tried going straight into mini me and still get same noise so its not the chain.

ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS OR SEEN THIS?

The 800G tube might be blown. It seems to be happening a lot lately.

I had my tech Dave Hecht open the mic up and check it out from top to bottom.
I can give you his number if you'd like.

Thanks for the replies guys. I really appreciate that.

I'm not really sure what im gonna do yet, ive been using it over the past couple days and it seems to be fine now so i dont know whats going on, i think when i get a space in my tracking schedule, i might send it off to be looked at anyway though.

also, as a side note...

I read an article on how the best match for the sony is the avalon 737 as it matched the impedence perfectly, ive been looking at getting the millenia, thats the reason i ask.

thanks guys,

Jesse

I know this is an old thread of mine but since I moved, I have the problem again.

Anyone know what may be the cause of this... I think your right in saying that its sensitive to mains at some places but not at others.

In fact the audio ground is linked to the chassis which causes ground loops so he just cut it . there are other things he did that he wants to keep "secret" .

I recently had the same problem I was told by Sony it could be the tube or a bad power supply.

Hi,

I don't have this problem exept when the tube is in bad shape but bear in mind there are tubes in the power supply too so those should be checked as well .

Hi,

Since 2006 we have the same problem that you described with our c800g. Our technician found out that there was a problem with the condensates of the heater voltage in the microphone and the power supply. They have been replaced and the hum was gone; but only for 3 month... The problem suddenly reappeared and so we gave the mic to a professional broadcast service of sony. They replaced the tube and gave us another power supply to check if the hum was gone now, but it wasn’t.
Any suggestions what could be done??? Thanks a lot!

Sony service can fix the problem ..tho not always first time.
Remember to include the power supply with the mic...when you send it for service

So today I took the mic into my tech friends at interscope and we tested the mic and power supply on the bench.

My mic, their power supply, their power supply my mic etc...

turns out... Its not the mic, or any of the three tubes

Its my power Supply!.. we swapped out the tubes from the PS too and it didnt make a difference. so... it has to be a component within the power supply that is reacting on a thermal level.

got you thinking now huh

so heres a little update...

After my visit to Bill at Interscope, the hum cleared, I'm not sure if it was luck or what but it was fine for months.

Last week the tube started to give out (producing rustling noises) so i replaced it and the mic once again sounded great but yesterday the hum has reappeared.

I made a high gain recording today so you could listen to it.

the chain is as follows:

C800G > 1073dpa (Gain = +50 / Trim = +10) > HD 192

http://www.jessjackson.com/files/c800ghum.mp3

Besides the windows being open and the traffic noise, the hum is apparent.

Is this the same hum that everyone else is getting?

PS: I just realized from the images above that your tech also cut the wire running from the ground to the PCB, I only cut the short unshielded wire running from the ground to the chassis so I'll try that today and report back.

My C-800 has the same problem. Bill bradley told me it was a bad cap and to send it to him, but I didn't want to be without it so I kept dealing with it. Just bought a Bill Bradley C-12, so I am thinking about sending it in.

Thanks, I just spoke to bill and he informed me that its the capacitors in the power supply that need replacing.

He recommends a Telefunken tube

I seem to see this quote in the first post, which seems to date from December 30, 2006...

"I just got this new and after 5-10 mins of having turned the mic on, i get a faint hum (sounds like a ground hum) but the hum gets louder over the next ten minutes untill its a very loud square wave sounding hum."

All is not as it seems, tho-- brother I sure know that well....
