| 2 Ch Mic Pre's? I'm thinking about the Amek 9098 DMA or the Great River MP-2NV. Any thoughts on this? How does the sound of these compare? Any others in this price range I should be considering? Usage: Female Voc, AC Gtr, Elect Gtr. Mics: ADK A-51TC (tube condensor), SM57/58 Thoughts, Opinions, Advice - I'll take it all. Thanks. Damon |

| I haven't compared the two, but I think that the MP-2NV is amazing on female vocals. It's on my 2004 short list of gear to buy. Good luck!

| Ive found the Pendulum Audio MDP1A to be awesome for acoustic guitar, electric and bass DI as well as using mikes and also for vocals keyboards, everything sounds bigger and better on the whole, and its great for drum OHs. It has a high end valvey sound, (without the DW Fearn price tag) but for female vocals you may want to try a few different colours. Its always best to try before you buy. Get your gear "pimp" to send you a few to try as you will find different colours work differently for different applications and singers. I use an AMEK channel in the box for vocals in conjunction with a purple audio MC76, as I prefer this type of compression to the comp in the AMEK. I have had some pretty outstanding results with this combination (using a Neumann M149). I guess its horses for courses, you would be foolish to buy without trying first. I have found only months later that a particular combo worked best. You need to do some meticulous and painful listening tests and mull over the results for a few weeks before deciding. This is how your audio "pallette" will develop. It takes a lot of listening and experimenting, but when it sounds right it is right. One thing i have learned to my cost is that there are no formulas but your ears are the most important pieces of equipment in making choices like this. you can blow a lot of dough on equipment that you think will be the winning formula, then you find that so and so got that amazing sound with a Mackie pre-amp and a Shure SM58. Theres no doubt that great gear used well will impart soul and musicality to your work, but the recording environment and monitoring environment as well as your experience are also equally important. A great room can make all the difference, perhaps more so, than esoteric equipment if the room is poor. Get these things right to give yourself the best chance for letting the equipment shine. I certainly noticed that the best sound I have managed for acoustic guitar came with using the MDP1A in conjunction with exerimenting with XY miking with two condensors. In fact it is so good I kick myself. this is what its all about. Getting excited about ones workand taking pride, this is what puts the tingle in the spines of the listener, and this makes it all worthwhile. Good luck in your search, you will learn a lot in the process James Cullen Seabrite studio |
