small-format console ?

ladies and gentleman,

i´m into looking for upgrading my mixer, tla m3. i only need 8-12 channels.

thinking of that 16ch. manley mixer, crane song one, some vintages like bcm10 etc.

comments on any of these, especially old neves ?
are they (esp. bcm10) worth their asking prices ?

ones who are using (it/anything similar or what i mentioned above), your comments would be appreciated.

if money wasn´t the issue, which small mixer you´d go for.

thanks much,

vd

If money wasn't an issue I'd have a 16 channel Forssell console built using his Sony replacement modules.

I've used the BCM-10 quite a bit....Its a great sidecar to track though- or to mix with if you only need ten channels....My buddy sold his BCM-10 that was loaded with only 8 1073s for $35,000 about 6 months ago, so they will run you a pretty penny if you can find one in good shape thats for sale. I love the sound, but would use it for tracking more than mixing.....but just because I usually need more channels . I'd recommend checking Aurora Audios (Geoff Tanner) little expandable mixer that he showed at AES, the GTM-822...or if you have a bigger budget the Daking stuff looks great...(havent tried it- but love Daking stuff). If you have the cash and can find one thats worth the trunk load of cash you'll probably have to spend on it, get the BCM-10. I doubt you'll ever lose money on it and it has a way cool vibe and sound the others dont.

vd,

i went for the purple audio mixer. it has 16 inputs and is modular. it is colored sounding in a very good way for me (i mostly do rock/indie rock). it's a prototype right now, but i think they will be making them custom to your needs (auxes, transformers, etc.) mine has transformers on the inputs and outputs (not cheap) and some auxes, pan pot and phase switch. i like the way it sounds. pete

small format console

If you want something that's a bit cheaper, look at the small Studers- they exist in 10 and 14 channel versions. Fantastic pres, and great monitoring capability, slate/talkback, tones, very smooth EQ, even a limiter on the stereo buss .. well, very nice. I wouldn't mix through it though, but against that, it has become the nerve center of my PT studio.

I went the Studer (12 channel) for summing purposes and to insert analog gear with. I have to agree about the pres and little EQ touch ups are fine sounding. Mixing with this hybrid approach though has me a little disenchanted at the moment as I was getting a better work flow with less options available to me. Now I have a difficult time deciding how to divi up the chores of the various outboard proccesors. I'm having frustrations whether they really sound THAT much better than the Waves or Sony plugs to justify all the noodling around. Just a bad day....
