Its hard for me to explain myself in english. Lets try, when they were tracking they didnt hear the stereo mix, just mono. I dont know why this console was stuck in that mode but Im guessing it was a creative impuls to really have to make the individual sounds different than the others. Otherwise it was impossible to hear each track.

so that means they just recorded their stereo tracks with only as much phase cancelling as they wanted to hear - no mono mode - just clever engineering

thanks for the clarification

The paper I red was about a interview with a guy in Sweden who actually bought this console and he said that it was stuck in mono in recording mode. I dont know what it means and how its done but it is a creative approach to really separate the tracks. One thing they had to do, I think, is to mike the instruments from different distance. So they probably worked a lot with the depth instead of the wideness.

Vocoded dog barks, talkbox pig sounds, sheep and bird samples, what's not to like? I'm glad so many others feel passionately about this album, it's one of my favorites as well.

Now if that ain't a chilling prediction of extremist suicide bombing, nothing is.

Animals could do with remixing though to make the drums sound better though.
Uhmmmm.... It would still be Nick Mason...

No offense to Mr Mason, but his "sound" has never been that great... But he's still the drummer in one of my all time favorite bands...

I must also say that it's one of those records that sounds much nicer on vinyl. Somehow just works better to these ears.

LIke I said; I don't mean to be disrespectful to Mr Mason... I was just one of those tongue in cheek comments. Sorry!

Oh come on that's unfair.

check out Live at Pompeii particularly "One of these days".

Many years ago I was at a party just outside London. Big old house, nice grounds etc. I popped into a garage to prepare a small "cigarette" and while rolling up on the Ferrari a nice girl came in and asked kindly if I would not do that on her dad's car as he might get pissed off. I asked what her dad did and she said he was a drummer. I asked which band and when she told me I almost fainted.....

I could tell the stories of winding up Roger "I loved Momentary lapse" or being told not once, but twice to "F*ck off" by Dave Gilmour because I called him "fat".

Ahh happy times......

Like I said; no disrespect to Mr Mason; I was just commenting on samw's idea that the drums be re mixed. The reason I said "it'll still be Nick Mason" is that if you listen to the Floyd albums they all possess (how many essess is that again?) that same "quality"/sound and that's Nick Mason. It's his style of drumming...
Just like Mick Fleetwood has his style (beating the crap out of toms and snare, but being very lightfooted), Ian Paice has his style and sound.
My intention was merely to point out the fact that Mason's a pretty soft hitter and he will never sound like any of the above mentioned. And that's fine! totally fine! That's the sound of Pink Floyd!

It this could also be a nice way to get this thread back on topic:

Maybe the drums should have been re mixed? Add a little dbx160 on the snare; a little 2254 on the toms, some 1176 on the room mic (did they use ambient mics?) and a 33609 on the drum bus... Should give thing a little more attitude, eh?

But then again; would we all dig Animals as much as we do now?

Let's talk about mics and stuff instead of arguing over Nick Masons drumming, please?

My apologies for going off on the other tangent..

Yes, maybe, because for me this was when I was a teenager.

I would not be so rude or stupid now.

Although you are talking about the quality rather than being an idiot like me, so I agree with you.

Interesting about Holly Mason is she married ?

Lets all lobby EMI for a remaster!

I'M not convinced about this "stuck in mono" thing ..... I was around for 2 weeks of the recording of Animals , mostly Dave Gilmour's gtr overdubs and the vocals , and it was never in mono !!!!
I was A kid at the time and a guest of Brian Humphries , but I knew mono from stereo !!! I remember Roger Waters being incredibly cynical in most coversations and Dave sitting on his Fender amp
playing incredible solo's , but Roger wasn't a fan of Australia and the "shed's" they had to play in !!!(I'm an Aussie !!) But Brian Humphries was a true gentleman and it was a great experience !!!!
