Do guitars that have been custom built for (by someone else) count?

Almost all of my guitars are custom pieces and I do a bit of building myself every now and then. Here are 2 of my own builds:

Ash-body, hardtail Strat/Tele Hybrid*


Mahogany body, set maple neck, maple fretboard Flying V**


*The pickguard on this guitar is actually much more of a vintage/mint-green color than what it looks like in this pic.

** The V's paint-job was inspired by the Smashing Pumpkins' video for "Tonight, Tonight".

These were actually a couple of pretty sick builds for me.

A "D" where I played with the upper bout shape a bit and splayed the sides so that the back is about an inch larger than the top. Nice piano-like sound to it. Brazilian back and sides.

And a "00" made from Birdseye. Bright, as expected. Birdseye is a bear to bend. Cracks easy. I went through a lot of nice wood getting the sides right.

My custom built for me guitars...

A really nice Heritage (which they built to my specifications), with two SD Seth Lover pickups, block inlays and a simple cream pickguard.



Twin bassguitars (fretted and fretless) by Maruszczyk, both with a custom built preamp (with parametric mid EQ).


I also had a Telecaster built for me (with Fralin pickups, but the neck pickup is a Strat pickup) a glued neck and a more versatile tone-put, but I don't have photographs at hand at the moment.

I got this one built by danish builder Mørch back in '93.

It's extra long scale 36", B-E-A-D strings, 2 x 3 band fully parametric EQ, external 32 volt power, balanced output, selector for single/humbucker/single for each pickup, active on/off for each pickup, gradual phase pot for one pickup...and some other bells and whistles

I do admit that I went a bit overboard with this one...oh well...it sounds great, but you can never find a sound you liked again...just too many parameters

Built this one from scratch from mahogany and ebony. I started the project in '93 (I was 23). Completed it in'95. I had no woodworking experience at the time, but I was always good with my hands. I showed it to a respected guitar repairman - he offered me a job. I've been doing lutherie (mostly repair) as a profession ever since. Now, almost 20 years later it's still my main (and currently my only) solid-body 6-string.

Not really a "custom" as such apart from the bridge unit, but this is my guitar which I built from a kit.

wow! i'm amazed by some of you guys--i wish i were manly enough to have the kind of skills required to build instruments like these those 2 acoustics look beautiful!
