Favourite Guitar Cables?

I'm looking at recording guitar properly and have recently been using Planet Waves cables. I was using a POD HD500 from Line6 and it sounded dull and lifeless so I tweaked it for ages and it sounded dead... most patches sounded the same. Then I switched to an el cheapo cable and BAM the sound was full on and EXACTLY how it should be. Back to Planet Waves and it went back to dull and lifeless. I know people go "I can hear the minute sound differences in guitar cables" but this was literally night and day. It sounded soggy and like a low volume fuzz distortion but once going to the el cheapo the sound came blasting out lke a real amp.

Which brings me to the question of what are your fav guitar cables? I tried 2 dif Planet Waves and they both sounded dead (despiute being brand new) so I'd like to avoid those.. Although I did hear they had a problem where they accidentally packed speaker cables as guitar cables, could this make such a massive difference?

Reminds me of when i was drumming for a band and our guitarist had just had his amp repaired. We'd just set up for a show and for some reason the amp it sounded awful spent ages checking everything and couldn't work out why it sounded so terrible, like really thin sounding with no drive. He'd just bought new guitar cables too and guess what it turns out they were speaker cables and long ones at that going to his pedals then another long one going to the amp! Sounded awful so this could be the problem.

To be honest in the studio I've not really noticed too much difference between short cable lengths but due to impedances and such they are important for guitar someone can perhaps explain better than me though.

+1 on Redco for custom cables - very helpful. For mic cable, I buy from Audiopile; the quality's much better than the Hosa or generic stuff at GC/Samash.

For guitar, I use George L's from guitar, on the pedalboard, and back to the amp. Super low noise.

The one that works/I don't have to fix it (seriously how do guitards burn through cables so damn quick).

I'm a guitar player and I use cables from a company called Lava cable. They have several price points for their stuff so you can spend what you want and get a high quality cable with quality connectors for a fair price.

There is a difference... I wasn't sold and had used monster cable for years because of the lifetime warrenty but I a/b'ed them with the Lava Clear Connect cable and heard an immediate difference.

Their solder-less pedal board kits are becoming a staple in the high end guitar market.

I'm not affiliated... just a happy customer.

I don't mean to dimmish your experience, but it really sounds like the Planet Waves cable was broken or you had a connection problem, it shouldn't be night and day especially to a cheap cable.

The other day I got a brand name cable (expensive) that sounded thin, had no lows and it was really quiet, but I knew straight away something was broken, so I got a replacement that sounded completely the opposite, big and full like it should.

Back on topic, of all the different ones I've tried, Evidence Audio is the best, fullest, most amazing sound I ever got, and the difference could be heard by anyone who's not completely deaf.

+1 for Lava cables. I use a combination of blue demons and soar, and they are great. I have ditched my buffers and reduced the amount of dirt pedals because of these. Huge difference in my rig.

I've been using Dimarzio guitar cables, low capacitance and lifetime warranty but still affordable. I haven't done any comparisons besides the cheap stuff they replaced but they sound good.

I recently switched to this type of Sommer cable : Sommer Cable The Spirit XXL Instr. 6.0

I really like it, sounds better than the Planet Waves cables I used before and so far I never had any problems. I also like the garden hose design of the cable and the pricing is very reasonable.

On my pedalboard I use George L cable. I've said it before but if you get their cable checker and be careful with the assembly it will work perfectly. I haven't had a single dropout in at least 2 years of regular gigging.

Years ago, a music store here had a bunch of cables for sale and it turned out that those used the 'legendary' Belden 9778 wire. The cables I bought then are long gone and over the last few years I tried to order it but there's no friggin' way anybody would sell it....... I contacted Belden directly which wasn't easy and then they quoted some ridiculous shipping fee so I forgot about it.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm looking at getting some of the Mogami imported from America, in the meantime I bought a Dimarzio cable and it's kicking butt all over the place.

Sommer GrindyCop Beast is what I use on the cable between my guitar and pedalboard. I dunno if it makes a big sonic difference, but I like the way it looks, and coils.

sommer cable | SC-GRINDYCOP BEAST | Bulk Cables | Guitar / INSTRUMENT cable HIGH-END

I use Canare or Mogami for the cables from the pedal board to the amps (post buffer).

Cheers

anything with good shielding and strong connectors.

it's true, guitarists break tons of cables (myself included)

I'm thinking 1) plugging and unplugging frequently (and not always the proper way by gripping the connector)

and 2) resting the guitar on / bumping the connector at the guitar end while playing

I don't do much live guitar but I have one Planet Waves cable in the home-studio - it works well (I like the tone) and hasn't broken.

I did get a 'free' second-hand cable that came with an amp I bought (S/H) - that cable had been used on stage and it's broken (intermittent signal).

I use only Mogami cables primarily because I have shit for soldering skills and they seem pretty sturdy, but I find the claim that there was a "night and day" tonal difference between two non-defective cables to be a bit difficult to believe...

I feel like a chump saying this but I like monster guitar cables
I like the material they cover the insulator with

but usually I just use some homemade redcos as short as I can make them to reach my amps
mogami cable some nice gold 1/4 jacks 14k gold solder on one or 2 cables

I did a null test one time on a bunch of cables and they all nulled fine
so I'm not sure how much in reality it matters. I suppose a noisy environment
with lots of interference it matters

I'll second Mogami! I use them to make custom runs and they always come through. It's the only cable I'll use or recommend.

That being said, Monster Cable is back to their evil ways again, this time being one of the main proponents of the SOPA and PIPA acts. Check these out guys, inform yourselves. It affects all of us!

Hey guys,

Not sure if I'm allowed to post this, cos it was in a private message, but one of the guys from Planet Waves messaged me and he's gonna replace my cables! :D Personally I think that's pretty awesome!

Live Wire Elite or Mogami Gold are the ones we've had the best performance with as of late.

I've used every brand of cable on God's earth and the cheapo PW ones are just fine. A guitar is generally going into a high impedance imput which means the resistance of the cable is neither here nor there on short to medium runs. Generally the problem is with either the jack or the connections from the cable run to the jack.

I've never had one of the more expensive PW cables fail on me, but on the other hand if the cable has regular unscrewable jacks I can resolder it.

There is no voodoo here.

The best guitar cable I have ever used by far is Vovox. The specific model is 6.3207, which I got at Pure Wave Audio:
VOVOX sonorus protect A 11.5' (3.5M) Instrument, angled TS-TS 6.3207 | Pure Wave Audio

I have directly compared this with Monster's high end guitar cables and the difference was still quite noticeable. The high's are much crisper and the lows are very tight. I did not expect to hear this much of a difference just by changing cables. Since then, I have upgraded my studio monitor cables to Vovox and immediately noticed a more well defined stereo image as well as a clearer high end.

I actually like and use Planet Waves cables. Balanced sound and they are quiet. George L and Monster are pretty microphonic. I don't play that loud or with that much gain and I can hear them slapped against a stage or hard floor. I also have a Japanese cable called Providence that is brighter but not as shrill or harsh as George L's remember, Jimi used curly cords on purpose.
