analog(ish) delay for trippy effects

I just got a new memory man and I'm really enjoying it. The modulation is great and it has a send / return loop and an expression pedal input which can be assigned to different parameters. You can put a Vol pedal in the loop to control feedback and use the exp pedal for something else like delay time to make it swoop. I've only played with it a little but so far it's pretty cool.

Roland Space Echo will get you "out there". Think early Pink Floyd and those crazy sounds during the interlude in "Whole Lotta Love". The vintage tape units can be found on eBay or you can get a digital recreation in the form of the Roland RE-20 for 2½ bones.

The EHX Deluxe delays are fun with the routable expression pedal modulation feature. You might also consider the Koma delay which is about as expensive as the tap tempo Deluxe Memory Man but crazier.

The Boss Space Echo is amazing for this type of stuff. No, it's not analog, but it doesn't sound digital. Fantastic effect and can do everything from normal tap tempo to complete and total sonic chaos. I'm a delay snob and this is one of the few that remains on the studio pedalboard.

Well you're looking for some features that aren't usually avail on analog delays. For me nothing beats a real echo plex. Fulltone makes a great one called the Tube Tape Echo that is built rugged and sounds amazing. No tap tempo and no control of modulation. But if you want the authentic sound this is the only way to go. I have yet to hear an emulation nail it. Sure some sound ok and are way more practical, but they don't sound as good. You have to play it like an instrument. It has beautiful natural modulation on it.

You should also check out the mooger fooger. That s a pretty cool,delay.

I have been using an old memory man for years that recently got put underwater in a flood and I have to replace it with something else. The new memory men don't sound the same as the one I lost. It featured a power plug that was directly into the pedal instead of being a wall wart. All the new ones are wall warts and don't have the same treble response. Is there something else that will give me more of the same sound that I'm used too?

Thanks guys, I'm gonna check this out at my local store when I get a chance. Looks cool from the youtube footage I found. I use a really bright sound, so it's hard to really tell until I get it through something close to my set up. I didn't know about his product though.

Check out Skreddy echo, Diamond Memory Lane 2 or Moog 104m. All are excellent delays, and has a loop, so you can affect only the delay part with whatever you like. My favorit "that's really weird" trick atm, is ringmodulated delays.

I don't know what your budget is but for $100 the MXR carbon copy analog delay (with modulation) is the best deal out there. And the footprint is tiny. Amazing sounding dark delays. I don't think it has tap tempo though.

For a bigger price and footprint the original deluxe memory man will get you a very nice sounding modulated delay with chorus and the Boss RE-20 Space Echo will get you nice tape saturated delay and warble with degradation and optional reverb. Those both would be in the $200 and $150 range used.

Late to this thread, but the new Malekko lofi ekko 616 fits this bill perfectly. Has a ring modulation/bit crush sort of sound for the delays, with modulation controls and a strong mix knob. Only thing is no tap tempo, but its a keeper for sure.
