Amp problems

The amp is a Traynor Custom 80. It seems to work fine with just two power tubes in (has been working like that for 4 years now) but plug in the other two and the amp makes a real ominous hum, turning the volume does not affect it, and the two tubes that it normally works fine with get super hot. Tried it with a few new sets of tubes and same results each time. Also the standby does not work.

As I said it works fine and has played dozens of shows over the past few years with no problems but I'd like to solve this if I could, any help would be appreciated.

Nonstop humming could be your recifier circuit. Hot tubes can be a number of things. Standby switch also? Did you drop it down a flight of stairs or something?

That's a strange list of problems. They seem like they could be unrelated, but who knows. In any case, this sounds like a job for a qualified tech!

Agree - time to take it to a qualified amp tech as it could be several issues.

Hi
It doesn't sound particularly complicated but you won't fix it by wild guessing, it needs the doctor!

So, the two good tubes get very hot and red when you plug in the other two? Sounds like a bias problem, perhaps a bias resistor died and when you plug in the other two tubes you just get a huge "too hot bias issue". Anyway, you need a tech...

how many channels? if those power tubes control a different channel then that could be the culprit. could also be a socket issue, cold solder joint, any number of things
