| The "trick" on them is, use the MID band to eq the low end. Try it on bass, and you'll never look back. (add it back with the OG signal). I use my parametric on the Bass, and sometimes my graphic on a kick mult. (crank the drive....wow) |

| i dont get any tubas in these here parts.... but ill keep it in mind next time i do. i have been trying to talk moog into making a moogerfooger distortion box with CV controlled distortion and tone so i can use the expression pedals to control them. ive been quite fond of the ring modulator and lpfilter distortions running into my bassman, but i cant switch the distortion off and on like i want. |

| Lives for gear | that mooger fooger stuff is totally wild- the delay flips me out more than any stand alone delay for guitar... the EQ must be sick |

| " sometimes my graphic on a kick mult. (crank the drive....wow)" E-Cue, you're the second person I've ever known to own a moog graphic eq- I'm the first. I haven't used mine in a long time, I'm in the process of resurrecting it along with my CX-1's. The 12-stage Phaser I got at the same time (1981), however, has found it's way onto a number of movies I've done sound FX design for, and onto a record just last week.

| there was a moog graphiq eq in the rack for the monitors in a rehearsal studio i used to go to a few years back when i was still playing in a band. all the other gear was really bottom end crap and old p.a. gear. it looked like they'd bought the cheapest stuff they could find just to get the job done. i always thought it was strange, that this moog eq was in there (it was just inserted over the monitors to notch out problem frequencies), but i assumed that it must'nt have been worth much, given the range of other gear in the room. should i go back to the studio and see if its still there, maybe offer the owner to replace it with a shiny new behringer eq or something? |

| OT: Clutch Hey alpha, per your recommendation, I recently went out and bought Clutch's "Elephant Riders." Wow, we really have different musical tastes. Not my cuppa. They sound like when Zappa with Beefheart (Bongo Fury) would drop into a goofy or heavy/funky riff for a few bars as a spoof on their own music, except Zappa n' friends did it much better. Somebody should teach them to outline their riffs and melodies with at least semi-expensive chords and they'd be a way better band. And the drummer is solid but boring. Some of the songs are mixed pretty well, but a few stand out as sounding like utter dogshit. Several tracks have super wack mixed low end and sub stuff happening. One of them sounds like it was recorded through a can on a string. They'd be fun to check out live if I was more interested in getting drunk or waiting for the headliners to show up. What gives? You like dis band?

| thats along the lines of what my wife thought when she heard the self titled CD... she couldnt understand why i liked them. then she saw then live and it was over. big clutch fan now. the drummer is the shit. grooves like a mofo. you dont like muchas veces? man... youve lost me then. i dont know about the zappa thing. most of his stuff sounds like a joke to me. like they were trying to be what mr bungle is. elephant riders wouldnt of been the one i would of picked up first... i probably would of started with the self titled but if you dont like elephant riders, there isnt much hope in your liking much else from them. although like many albums, give it a while. funny thing is, they blow headliners off the stage. i saw them eat marilyn manson for lunch. limp bisquick were mere gradeschoolers [although they were the ones opening for them], orgy i think opened for them also. all came off weak as hell. my pick is their non-major label album, Jam Room. |

| Limp bisquik! he ha ho ha haha I'll be using that one. I remember the little sample I heard of GAM, another band you suggested, that I liked alot more than Clutch and I thought the drummer was way more swingin. Couldn't stand the singer's voice though. Also I don't think Mr. Bungle could have existed if Zappa never showed his face on a stage. In paralell universes, I get Zappa the way you get Clutch. So where's the good music you said I should look for? hah j/k

| I like Zappa for different reasons, mainly that there's so much to listen to in one sitting, but a little goes a long way. Bongo Fury is one of my favorite Zappa band formations. The payoff riffs on Zappa's extremely hard to listen to "200 Motels" album make the whole thing worthwhile, even if it sounds like it was recorded in a sewer. Some of the heaviest and/or funkiest grooves I've ever heard in my life happen in his rock compositions. Just plain putrid sick grooves, even if they don't always last long enough (Zappa pieces often have the attention span of a hyperactive, autistic flea with ADA, but somehow he manages to make the whole song connect in an extremely jagged way). Ween are nerds with lots of time on their hands to figure out ways of making unoriginal music somewhat entertaining (in a dork's kind of way), but musically void. It's too bad they're being mentioned here in the same couple of sentences with Zappa, who pieced together both good/great and bad musical ideas (like he was trying them all out at once) in one song, and found ways to for it to make sense. IMO Ween and Zappa don't compare. You think more listening will change my mind about Clutch? If it doesn't, I'll be adding to my collection of drink coasters and 'clay pigeons'. Pull! Bam!

| i dunno. i was listening to some zappa last night and just find it childish fodder for ADD. its just such a joke, with some of the lamest incoherent ideas and the cheesiest musicians, zappa is like velveeta. bozzio is a bozo with some of the stupidest and lamest drumming i have heard in a long while. everything is so ****ing cheesy. i cant get even close to past it. its like a bad acid trip at a circus. while bands like mr bungle are a good acid trip at a circus. of course there is just far too much zappa material to even begin to listen to, and nothing i have heard has made we want to explore his mental disease much. otoh, i put in elephant riders today in the car and it ****ing ruled. they are SO MUCH better than zappa. so is ween. at least they know how to write a freaking song. getting into clutch is about sitting in the groove... and the lyrics are sheer poetry. its not about "expensive" chords or senseless changes. the gems on ER are title track, 8x's over miss october, the yeti, muchas veces... although i can certainly put the whole album on and sit back and enjoy. i even spent some time last night putting together a historical picks cd for you of them starting out in 91 to 2001. my my how they have changed over the years. of course ER is their most accessible album so i doubt much of what i will send will have much bearing on your opinion. of course, i highly appreciate everything zappa has stood for and fought for. i thought he was a top notch human and the world is certainly a sadder place now that he is gone.

| Zappa isn't for everyone. Most people don't have the patience to sift through his works for the good stuff, as he was damned prolific. When he's on, he's really on.. when he's off, he just plain sucks and even I will either tune out or skip past it. I also really dig many of his guitar solos. With an axe in hand, he was really ahead of his time. Dweezil wouldn't have been anywhere near the guitarist he is if not for his Pops. I don't think Zappa was writing childish stuff, I think he was irreverent and indifferent to cultural normalcy, political perversion and musical schlock, although he wasn't immune to it, either. Ween can write a tune, and I guess part of the charm is supposed to be that he can make himself sound like a texas rancher with a deep voice (among other things), singin' a country song with funny lyrics. To recording engineers and people interested in the novelty act part of it, it can be very entertaining. For me, it's fun for about the first two times I hear it, and then it becomes only an annoying curiosity. I admit I have yet to give ER a real listen outside of car, like in the studio but I'll try that today along with mwagener's cd. ER didn't interest me enough to want to put it up on the real monitors.

| uh, i like to drive to it. also, crackerjack is a killer song too, instrumental with winton marsalis? playing on it. to be honest the album is kind of a ****ed endeavour. it was produced by jack douglas who the band apparently didnt dig his ideas too much. like in green buckets, he wanted to put trashcan lids being banged. talk about contrived. so i dont have the same passion for that album as their self titled or especially jam room which was done off major label. they are a band who is going to do their stuff regardless.... which is really what i dig about him. the thing i like about JP on drums is he is tight as a mutha****er. he makes that band so tight. he isnt overly flashy. no fills for the sake of fills... he has serious control of what he does. as for the sonics. i think every album aside from jam room could be done better. i think jam room sounds great. but im in it more for the songs. also, maybe the sub thing you are hearing is a 24" kick. i also notice that the guy who mixes it probably used a dbx120 on the kick. i swear i can hear a synthasized bottom note on the kick... and made too low to blend imo, maybe a keyed osc. although strangely the recording i did with JP i found myself having to roll the lows more than anything on the kick. ween. a novelty act maybe to a label, but there is sheer genius in their work. they craft beautifully ridiculous songs which mock the music industry at large. ween has more in common with zappa than clutch. songs like 'waiving my dick in the wind' or 'mr would you please hold my pony'... ****, the mullosk album is so zappa. and live they are the absolute SHIT. if you havent seen them live, go see them. they are tight as a mother****er... and you just might get a contact buzz. clutch on the other hand is far too serious and apathetic to be like zappa. a sheer poet of a lyricist, the beauty is in the words and the grooves they lay back on. they are more like the meters meets sabbath.
