Cure for the thin female voice...

Ok, I just picked up a pair of OSA " Mutant" pres... ( thanks nathan) Tracking vocals with a gal whos record we have been working on, She has a Tori Amos kind of vibe, but the voice is way thinner, lots of point and no real bottom...

So, in the name of "beef" the path is Soundelux U95S, OSA "mutant", 1176.

thin no more, thin no more... The OSAs rock on the other sources I have used em on so far as well, btw.

Excellent to hear that - researching the OSA pres; and the main thing I need is to fatten up a thin female with a Tori kind of voice!

Good timing!!

I had a very similar problem started with a NEUMANN 103 AVALON 737*****VERY VERY BAD CHOICE!!!!!Then I decided to try something very unusaul ,I dug out a small Shure ksm 27 vocal Mic and ran the Avalon thru a Distressor in the british mode!I felt as if god had taken a pack of monkeys off my back and the girl was well, as nice as nice can be about the sound of her voice .Then a little antares auto tune and boom! close as close can be to instant star************At least to her friends and family.

Before I bought my Great River and Averill Pre's I talked with Dale, I'm not sure OSA is up and stable yet, thats the impression I got.

I've had excellent excellent excellent vocal takes done through the TLM 103 paired with and Avalon VT737

Might have been the particular voice your were recording?

Sometimes a SM57 will kill the Neumann M149 on vox

there is nothing thats tried and true for the voice

Cool

Good point Jason! I think the situation is something like a upper female voice with a sharp 3 k like the dixie chicks !That voice can slice a hole right through your head!

Focusrite ISA series eq

2 chancess to whip out 'telepone' frequencys / shrillness

a chance to 'warm' and a chance to add slick HF..

+ HP filter

Ideal IMHO

Or, double-track with a low male vox and have it way way underneath the main vox. Record the main vox with dolby nr on, but leave it off when mixing for the high-end slickness.

eh add "complementary" sincopated guitar/synth riff with emphasized low mid freqencies as contrast to spiky female vocal for "beauty and the beast " effect on average joe consumer's ears.

painkillers = good = no headache in them headz = gone to bed

I recently recorded a female singer who had kind off a thin voice with a shrill top.
I tried a TLM 103 and a Geffel 990 through a Amek DMCL and ended up using a SM57!
The proximity effect made her voice fuller and the mic also tamed her shrillness, making it nice and round.
I wonder how something like a AEA ribbon mic would work in these situations...

Dale is a friggin' genius. He is busy as hell at CRAS trying to re-build a whole NEVE board, while also attending to every quirk at CRAS (2 neoteks, 2 SSLs, another NEVE, etc). I've heard and used the OSAs. They sound great and are worth whatever wait may come. If I find out anything new, i will let u know. PEACE

Talked to Dale Sunday and today for a while. He is finally finished with the Neve, so things should free up greatly. Things are moving along slow, but sure for OSA. Atlas just zapped up a bunch of preamps from Dale to fill a large amount of preorders, more will be on the way shortly. After that things should be moving along well for the preamps and racks in general. The long awaited EQ's and compression will be able to be placed into production as well (they are already in beta), I'm pushing for full production for a minimum of 4 preamp types and at least one compressor and one EQ (2 of each best case scenario) by AES 2004 SanFran.
