Jim Messina's Private Studio - a Tonelux "work in progress"

Out with the old, in with the new!! Singer-songwriter-producer-engineer extraordinaire Jim Messina moves out his old Soundcraft 2400 to make room for a new custom 32 channel Tonelux console.

Paul Wolff spent some time there last week helping Jim put it all together. Check out the photos and story-so-far here: http://www.tonelux.com/messina.html

Here's a pic of the semi-loaded frame (and yes, those are API EQs in the right bucket)

Gil - Thank you for the pics. Special thanks to JM for sharing. Hopefully somebody has a detailed (cad?) drawing of that frame because I belive this is were I am headed. Any chance for close in shots of each bucket after it is completed?

Looking forward to hearing that tasty Tele through the Tonelux!

It's hard to tell from the website just how much stuff you'd need, the best way to assemble it, and what to use as a frame if you were to make a "real" console out of the Tonelux stuff... how much would something like that run for?

Custom Tonelux console solutions start at $29,000. Jimmy's, when all said and done, will be north of $50,000. Furniture and frame run $3500 and up.

That's cool... I'd love to get the equivalent of my Midas Venice in the form of a custom Tonelux console, maybe some more channels and definitely more bussing and sends.

Gil - Do the VRacks sit in the buckets shown that were constructed for Jimmy? Or how does that work?

Thanks

The ears come off the VRACKs and they mount to those silver side panels which comprise the buckets.

Jimmy already had the 500 series stuff. We modified the rack to fit the frame. Just added some more pix, Jimmy added the wood and more modules. It looks real nice. Just finishing up the fader system, it also is working well.

Next up will be Paul Reed Smith's rig.

While it's not a large as Jimmy's, it's gonna be sweet! I'm picking up a good deal of the rig tomorrow.

Looks nice. Someone here was asking about EQF-2's recently, I see there's one in that 500 rack.

Yes, the solid not moving ones are, they are fine if you leave them alone. The other cables for mics etc are Zaolla which look pretty good.

I didn't find any issues with the cables, and when the rep brought them, he said that they have improved the soldering to make them more relyable, but like I said, they are working fine.

Very nice Gil (Paul and JM) -

Any chance for a detailed explanation of the patch bay set up? Specifically:

1) Normals on the bay (eqs, inserts, etc.)
2) Integration of API pres (use of submix?)

I think it would be intructive for those considering Tonelux (still including me) to see how JM has his rig set up.

How about the manual (?) faders on the left; what are they connected to?

Thanks!
