How did you get started?

Hello my goverment name is Patrick ,but im better off being called Trakz. Im 21 yrs old and have been into recording since the age 10. Its funny how i got started, i happened to go into someone's home who was using a dj mixer through the mic input and recording through acid, I reccomended that he sticks the dj mixer in the line input but he couldnt care less.

So i did the exact same setup but i chose the line in and started on vegas pro 1.0. Years flew and i got introduced to Quartz audiomaster pro 4.5, then Nuendo 1.5 >>>>>. 3.2. I loved the ease of nuendo but hated the internal summing.

Now im a samp junkie, and im breaking my neck to learn it. I hope i grasp on very quickly and continue to do my work. I have finished my personal recording of my album (Xpect da UnXpected) hiphop genre.

I've been using the same gear for the past 4yrs now, (not including the other specs from my win98-me days on another pc).

My current gear is as follows:
p4 2.40ghz
512mb
1 20gb/Os
1 80gb/rec
MAudio Delta 44 (88.2 is where this card shines @)
Mackie Control
Samp 8 (Renting)
Mackie HR-824
KRK V4
Mackie 1202 vlz pro
Rode NTK.

For me it started back in 1999 (maybe 2000) when my band signed a production deal. We recorded in a pretty sweet studio that had a "New" RADAR Otari setup. We were all blown away since it was the first time any of us had used any digital gear. We crapped our pants after watching the producer perform a cut and paste. OMG! HOW DID YOU DO THAT!?!?

Well, the band did a few showcases for some major labels, but never scored a deal. About a year later, I stumbled upon a cool program called "Cool Edit" that let me do a lot of the cool tricks I learned from the producer that we worked with. I screwed around with that for about a year, then started actually reading and learning about acoustics and the basics of recording.

Over the last few years I've had the opportunity to become good friends with a couple of guys who are recording engineers for a living. These guys have taught me a TON of stuff about gear, plug-ins, and running a business. I found it's true that your learning really starts to excel when you watch someone who is really damn good. I remember asking one of them recently, "You ever check out Gearslutz.com?" and he was like "Gear-what?"

Arrow '97

For me it started in '97 when I began my B.M. in production & technology. I met a guy on these forums named chap in '99 and things began moving from there. Assisted a session with Garth Hudson and Levon Helm in '00, and began working in post in '01.

Cassette 4 track, late 80's as a teen. My friend and I used to do his originals and some covers on it. Graduated to 1/4" 8 track Fostex in the early 90's and stayed there for quite some time (unbelievable sound compared to cassette!) then took a break at the end of the 90's.

Early 2000's I got back with a Fostex D160 recorder and a Behringer mixer, and have come a long way since. Now I've got a full blown Nuendo rig and a room dedicated as a studio over my garage (about 480sq ft with a full bath!) and am wanting to convert the 900sq ft garage itself into a tracking area soon.

Genetics and injuries

My fathers family is a bunch of musicians, the males in mothers family al were into electronics. When I was in 7th grade I completley severed the median nerve in my right arm so playing guitar was tough when you cant feel the strings o the pick!
Thats okay the gear was cooler! started recording my band with a Tangent 1202 and an akai reel to reel evntually a Tascam 35 and 70-8
College was all about live never went to class always was either doing a show or session for what ever school I was at with some studio and touring work here and there!
I was lucky one of my uncles Installed the first Digital telephone switch in the world and I learned all about samples and DSP way before anybody in the audio world new what PCM was.
Lucked into the job I always wanted as the Retail manager at Full Compass for seven years My Clients included Smart, the now defunct, Musichead and most of the Madison WI area. I learned a lot from my clients and I must admit alot from Jonathan Lipp, the man knows alot about audio specificly microphones and techniques Though we may not always have agreed on everything and our styles and aproaches differed but we respeced each other (one of my proudest moments was when he said "you know more about what we do than anyone in the building"
I was lucky that I was the one who built our 1st pro tools systems (my systems were very stable and tesed before they left the door.
I was also lucky enough to meet many of the manufactuer, reps and distributors

But a 97% burn and a year in the hospital ended that I tried to come back but you Flambe the human body (don't ask how if you want to know Google April 19 1998 Madison WI and you can find it all out)it just can't handle those 60 hour weeks!
My get well present from digi was a Protools 24 system with an 888 since expanded!
and I am now here in galveston slowly building a very geeky rig and trying to find that perfect space! (would love to find asluty partner)
The one thing a learned along the way is that The most important piece in the signal chain are the transducers the differences in pres comps ect is minisual compared to that in microphones and speakers I would rather put my money into many high quality mics and and a few esntial pieces of out board than build the out board selection first!
