Thumbs up Got a new mic and love it

I am so delighted since yesterday I want to tell about it to people who understand (= gearsluts ).
Yesterday I plugged in my new mic, a Soundelux U195. Made a little check shred to see how it would compare to my old AKG C3000b.
I knew that it would be a great piece of gear, but I had no experience with a mic of its class and thus was very curious to hear the difference.
I switched back and forth between the two tracks to compare and the longer I did the more I fell in love with the new baby. And I am in heaven

For those who want to know the difference too I have put the shreds ( 4 mb wav format ) on so that they might check it out.

AKG C3000

U195

Finally I have a question to the old hands here. As the U195s output appears much lower compared to the AKG while both should have about the same impedance ( 200 ohm ) I wonder if the lower level would be just normal or not. The U195 needed about twice the gain for nearly same level as the AKG. ( The mics were conducted with the Demeter HXM pre.)
Any thought about this would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Good day

Ruphus

Glad you like it - I love mine as well.

I know what you mean about the output compared to other mic’s. I use API’s which have a lot of gain, so it’s not a problem. I actually like the lower output - in many cases I usually need to pad other mics.

Try it on lot’s of stuff - you’ll be impressed.

Now if there was an easier way to get it outta the box...

Hey Bassmac,

you just gave me big relief. Thank you man!
You know I was just fearing the low output eventually could be meaning that the specimen I got might be not up to specs, but with your help I know now that everything is in order.

The pre that I will mainly use also has mucho gain and very low noise. So, I can´t wait to see how future sessions will sound like with this beautiful baby.

Getting it out of the box ... The holes in the foam are much too small to slip under the mic with fingers, but I thought it can be helpful to lay a little ribbon or so in those holes there and then just pulling on the ribbon should make things much easier I guess.

Greets,

Ruphus,

If you've been using a C3000 as your main mic, you'd probably find a dixie cup covered with wax paper to be an improvement!

No wonder you've been such a fuss-budget all these months!

Hi LittleDog,

it´s relative. I think to have some good sounding stuff tracked with it. ( Guitars and femal vocals ) Two weeks ago there was a professional TV technician here who works a lot with audio and while he was playing around with the mix in question he found the sonics to be pretty nice too.

Only when I compared the C3000b to the U195 the AKG appeared harsh and cheap sounding. To me this means rather that the U195 is an outstanding mic than the AKG to be so inferior. It might also depend through which pre match the AKG is conducted. After the new pre had arrived I was astonished about what the AKG can pick up. I´d say it can hear an ant clearing its throat. It made my shirts cloth creaking from breath and when I moved my head the neck rubbing against the collar sounded like an avalanche coming down the roof

As my rig yet is working reliably merely since not even a year now my education isn´t that solid, however I realize that my judge grows quite fast ( like e.g. detecting how slight audio processing even through expensive RTAS plugs is degrading parts of the signal.)
My first tracking trials where with crappy radio recorders and hissing tapes. It has made me still remembering where I come from and the more appreciating todays sonic abilities almost every day again. In case of that I remained that humble it could ensure me some enthusiasm throughout the future.

I am not that spoiled like some of you guys who can afford 5000 bucks or so only for a compressor like the Tube-tech or so.

A mic like the U195 just wets my pans. I am flying. Admittedly though nothing seems to dam up the endless GAS of a real gearslut. I was / am already about selling my bike to finance something like the corby convertible. ( Although, bad as I am at selling / boosting, the Korby might wait some more time for me ...)

Anyway, agreed about that the C3000 will hardly find a job anymore here in my little studio.

Ribbon idea works good.

It seems to work best around the base where you plug it in - just to get it started out of the box.

Good idea.
