Gordon Rocks..

I got my Gordon pre amp last week and would just like to say that these MP3 threads which compare it to the Millenia do not do it service .. it is an incredible pre.... it has less of a hump in the low mids than the Millenia and a more open extended top end ... oddly enough though it is without a doubt the best pre I have ever heard for recording bass
.

......... Note: ( I still love my Millenia by the way) but in general I would go to the Gordon as initial first try pre most every time

Yep. Grant is one of those wonderfully weird designer guys who seems to worry ONLY about how good the stuff he builds can sound. There are a few others who are the same way, and those guys (and their companies) should be supported by those of us who still care how goot the stuff that we record can sound.

We used a Gordon pre all over "Russ Long's Guide to Nashville Recording". My only regret is not stealing it from Russ!

Incredible sounding pre!

I hear you ... when you find a piece of gear that good with that little hype and that nice a guy building it , it makes you want to sing it's praises ... even though I probably won't say too much more down the line because it actually makes me sound half decent as an engineer and I'll want to guard the secret.
, I'm not much of a bass player either I support my songs with it until I bring in a better player but the pre is so even across the spectrum it makes me sound half decent at that as well.... great job Grant! keep at it.

Has anyone compared the Gordon to the GML 8304 Pres? I have searched alot of threads concerning the gordon, but never it has been compared to the GML. The Conclusions all are making between the Gordon and their other Pres (Milennia) would be very similar to what I would say if someone'd ask me to say what I like more on the GML than on Milennia (not diging the Milennia, it is a very fine piece of gear).

Thanks
Daniel

Yes, posting some AB samples would be a great thing.

forget the samples posts already

I'm the first one to say the system of comparing preamps sucks but you really do have to just order what you want and try it in your own rig.Accept no substitutes

Didn't audition Gordon, but in clean, realistic sounding department I was stunned with Martech MSS-10 pre. Their DI is also excellent.
Definitelly worth to try (from what I heard in session it's more interesting than Hardy or Millenia). I think overall it outperforms DACS (another very good contender in same field), too.

if I had depended on the posted mp3's I might have passed on the Gordon ... mp'3's do not do a great pre justice ... get it in your hands and use it send it back if you are not impressed ... sure there are other high end pres out there that are great. like I said I still love the Millenia ... but the Gordon is my first vocal choice , bass ,acoustic git and percussion ... then LTD 1 with sm-7 and eq for vocal for agressive vocal stuff, TG 2 or API for electric git ... drums Millenia for overheads but Neves still rule for kik snare etc.... although if I had 8 Gordon pres I would not hesitate to try them on most of the kit... I may order more for down the line but Grant is back ordered 5 months on his multi pre stuff

Talking

The Gordon is IMHO by far the best sounding pre I've ever used, and I've heard them all. Russ Long let me use his for a few days, and I immediately bought one. It is my first choice on vocals, snare, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, and everything else. Great with the Folcrom, too. It is so three dimensional and open that the sounds seem to jump from the speakers and sit in the air in front of you. I know I'm sounding like an advert, but my new Model 5 has changed the way I hear music. I absolutely love it. Plus Grant is incredibly cool and helpful, and he will personally deliver the pre to you if you live here in Nashville. Best customer service I've ever heard of!

My $.03

Gordon may be great preamps and I'm never sold on looks which it does not have, again thats not a issue, my biggest and only issue WTF with all the different pieces ? maybe there is a reason for this that I have not saw in any other preamps.
Its like a nickel and dime game except much bigger bucks.

Gordon - GML - Millennia - John Hardy - Earthworks

I have recently had an extended audition of the Gordon Model 5. (A friend loaned me his for several months) - A good friend indeed!
I own and use a GML 8302, Millennia HV3D, John Hardy M1, and a Earthworks Lab 102. - I like "Clean Pre's. I do also own and use Neve, API, Telefunken, Langevin etc.... But that is another discussion entirely.
In a word = the Gordon M5 is "Incredible" I have used it non stop for weeks. Everything from Drums, Guitars, Trumpet, Saxophone, Upright Bass, Flute, Percussion and countless other things.
It is Very Fast, and Very Full. I have not found any weakness in this Pre. Even the D.I. inputs sound Incredible!
Having said that, I wont be selling any of the other Pre's. But I do plan on buying a Gordon M5 to add to my arsenal.
As to which of the other Pre's sounds closest to the Gordon. It would have to the GML. But the Gordon has just a bit more 3 dimensional sound to it. The Millennia HV3D is a slightly different beast. While it is not as linear in the frequency response, The HV3D is incredibly fast on transients. The upper Midrange is very forward. = It is my absolute favorite for Recording a Drum kit!
The John Hardy M1 is a completely different beast. While it is known for having a "Clean" sound. It uses Op Amps and Trannys - The M1 sound is slightly more colored than the Gordon M5, But it is much less colored than say an API. The M1 can actually make something sound better, while retaining the clarity of the source! Upright Bass is a good example. The Tranny add's a low end bloom that compliments the sound in a very pleasing way. The Gordon M5 is very linear - It just seems to gives you more of everything that is there, compared to other Pre's.

If I absolutely had to chose only 1:

#1 Gordon M5
#2 John Hardy M1
#3 Millennia HV3D
#4 GML 8302

As usual, Your Mileage May Vary. Just thought I would share what I have heard over the past several weeks.

Could you tell us what you think of the Earthworks 102 in comparison?

And if you have tried that - the Forssell?

Thanks!
