| Gear Head | New Home Studio
I'm about to buy my first house and build my own personal home studio. It's a MAJOR leap for me but I've known I wanted to do it for years. I'm draining my college fund (held up in coca cola stocks) and will be using my inheritance to fund it all. MY QUESTION: I do plan on doing business in said studio, what do I need to know to be sure I can run my business out of my new home? I do plan on taking pictures of all the progress and will create a site to allow you slutz to monitor the progress and advise me along. I've done my homework. This is going to be fun!

| Lives for gear | Congrats ![]() running a business from home can be tricky, especially if you have clients coming over. Check with your city about zoning laws and such.

MY QUESTION: I do plan on doing business in said studio, what do I need to know to be sure I can run my business out of my new home? I think you're asking about legal aspects here? I'm not a lawyer [thank God] but am somewhat familiar with the hassles of home business. It depends on how by the book you want to do it. Personally I prefer it because you don't open yourself to possible hassles and BS later. It can also be a real hassle to do it by the book, but it can be done and you have the piece of mind you're not open to attack from bureaucrats. The factors involved include: what is the zoning of the property? what are the local zoning laws? what regulations do your local city or county operate off in the area of home business? and do they or how do they enforce them and what penalties do they apply if they find them violated? do they require a business license? what about State? do they require a resale license? are you going to just sell services or product also [CD duplication would be a product for example or selling CDs made in the studio for retail] First step would be to contact the city/county re business license requirements and home business certification and see what's involved. Also if you are getting into major renovations for the studio you may want to check out building codes and licenses, so there's no chance they can come around later and tell you to tear it all down and do it again! And realize city/county/state they may all want a piece of the action in business/sales taxes. Best Dave
