I still remember when they were referred to as the Ain'ts and their fans wore paper bags on their heads. What a great day for New Orleans and all of America. This is the "feel good" story of the year so far. Gotta love a good storybook ending. It inspires hope. Congratulations New Orleans. Let the party begin.

I looked into it and The Bengals were using it first.

Not true... maybe a coincidence that the chants are so similar but it was not ripped from the Bengals... It was started by Dalton Hilliard when he played football at Port Allen High School. As he went on to LSU the chant followed him and became popular at LSU for a short time until he got drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 1986. The chant moved on with him to the Saints as well and has stayed ever since.

Anyway, many thanks for the support. I was out on Bourbon St. last night and it was unbelievable!!! WHO DAT!!!

We were rooting for the Saints here.
If the Colts would have won it would have been so ho-hum.

That pick-six was just fantastic.

Congratulations New Orleans!

I just got through talking with my brother tonight and it just confirmed what I was already feeling. That Saints coach had a BIG part in helping his team to victory. He made some gutsy plays and also seems cool under fire as well as looking like he doesn't get too negative and dwell on past bad plays with his players. Anywas, good qualities to have in a coach.

Who Dat! Super proud to finally see this...didn't think it would happen in my lifetime. I poked my head outside right after they won and there were car horns, boat horns, fireworks, and people screaming "who dat!" from about 5 different directions. Incredible experience.

Let me preface this with...this is a silly and trivial, yet fun, little debate so don't think I care or am mad in any way ...and for the record, who dat!

The Bengals used it in 1980 when they went to their only superbowl and still use it. (it might have been around with the Bengals before then but it was huge during the superbowl year) I read that it potentially dates back to an old 19th century New Orleans song but, as far as a specific NFL chant and merchandising, Bengals beat em by 6 years. 6 years would pre-date a college chant (working back from 1986) and, unless the guy was able to get it really (and nationally) popular as a freshman or sophomore in high school, it predated Dalton's high school coining.

As far as similar
Who dey, Who dey, Who dey think gonna beat them Bengals
(sadly everyone )

can't get much closer than
Who dat, Who dat, Who dat think gonna beat them saints

I'm shocked that they would be brave enough to model a chant after such an unsuccessful team. I'm glad the cheer worked for the Saints! Maybe it will rub off and there can be another first time Superbowl winner in the next decade.

now back to more meaningful things like lusting after 10k mics
