Thread Starter | Apparently Im good at MAstering Hip-Hop
Like the title says... I have been trying over the course of year to master my own band's stuff ( a no-no; yes indeed ) We do heavier rock stuff. Never happy with my job on my own mixes versus mastering jobs "mastering engineers" have done on my stuff. Learned alot about the whole process of mastering for loudnes, EQ, etc. So anyways, my friend says he is managing this hip-hop group that needs some mastering and asked if i could i do that...I said why not let me try and if you like the result of one song we'll talk. Did my thing on it (basic level checking, fades, sonlaksis comp, L2 style limiter and some Eq-ing mostly in the high registers) along with a new trick (involves a certain treatment on the anything punchy and bassy) and walla.... The guy loves the results. I found out that, in their opinion, it beats a few high-money mastering jobs of the same material. Anyone else been through something annoying and then rewarding like this? Is hip-hop just easy to master or are these guys deaf? Im guessing that all the hard, perfectionistic work i put into my own mixes resulted in a killer ear for others mixes, but also proved the rule that u shouldnt master your own mixes, esp. if its your band/group....

heres the before and after samples I will give to client tomorrow... original Sweet J sample Mastered Sweet J sample As you could see by putting the ORG on a wave editor, I only had about 1-2 easy dBs, so i had to get creative and possibly overt. But like i said, they like it! |

If they thought that rhyme was good, then anything is acceptable. Master much better than the original, but still a perfect example of polishing a turd. I've made a living polishing turds. Makes working with good material a no-brainer. |

I just recently found out that I'm good at displaying humility. That's one of the things I love about myself. |
