| Gear addict | a great day to be a slut
Since I had the day off today(Friday), I decided to make my usual Saturday rounds (pawn shops, GC, etc.) First thing I bought was a non working AT4050 (complete with shockmount and case in original box) for $35. Gonna take this to my mic tech and hope he can fix it cheap. I went to Guitar Center's holiday sale and looked at "the list". Bought a brand new Casio Privia PX200 for $199 (they had been selling these for $549). I know it's no Kurzweil, Korg, etc. but it's a hell of a lot better than the Williams I've been using. Last stop was at a pawn shop I rarely visit. There on the counter sat a Ramsa WR-S4416 mixer. They wanted $100 as is, no returns. They don't take Visa, so I offered the guy all the cash I had left on me ($57) and he said sold. So far 15 of 16 channels checked out great. One channel is working intermittently, so hopefully it's either dirty or a loose connection. I was going to open it up and clean and check everything anyway, since it's an old board. So, that was my day. How was yours? God, I love being a slut.

i'd say the mic was your main score. you could send it back to AT worse case and still have saved a good amount of money over buying new/used and functioning.

Why don't we have Pawn Shops in the UK? American people always seem to be going to Pawn Shops and buying cool shit. We get porn shops, and Cash Converters. Both rubbish.

It is to me an obsessed addiction. I can get a kurz one day for $300 and turn it over for $500 or $600 after playing it. I got a tube screamer for $40 and got $179 on ebay last night. What my plan was to build a studio up with buy and sell Iv been able to get stuff then the guy comes out his garage with a box of stuff "I have no room for" like mic stands, speaker stands and pedals all worth more then the original buy! Iv not done a single recording in half a year and my studio is full of half working high end synths. today I pick up a good shape K2000VS sampler for $200 with max ram and scsi drive, sampler option! Last month I got a mint shape Top hat amp retail $2000 for $1100 plus a $400 flight case! Just dont turn into a pawn shop! Keep it balanced!

I had a great day to be a slut today! I found a really cool shop in the live music area of my town. It has sweet 50's and 60's furniture and last but not least a wicked collection of microphones. They are mostly old crazy broadcast microphones and super rare vintage mics (bakelite, prototype ribbons, crazy stuff). So i got to talking to him about recording and my interest in music and creativity. We got to talking also about Alt-country (wilco, uncle tupelo, the old 97's). I am 15 (yes that is young) but i believe i can defeat more than a few people here at enginerring and my age does not display my recording ability. We started going through a few boxes of mics he has. I pulled out 2 Sennheiser 403's and i started getting happy. he was like 'oh ya those, they need work im not quite sure yet what". bummer. but then i pulled out 2 Shure unidynes and then a little Grundig box. He was like "keep the Grundigs a friend just gave them to me. I want to spread the creativity." I am very happy and quite excited to try these guys out on guitar cab once i change the DIN connectors. i plan on going back and buying his unidynes and a few electrovoice pieces he has. I love meeting kind people when you really start losing faith . well i hope my story didnt annoy you and check out the model: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Stereo-Grundig-W1-dynamic-microphone_W0QQitemZ310136354820QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4835913804&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1234|293%3A1|294%3A50they are also perfect condtion |

There are two, possibly three Pawn Shops in Preston alone. One on New Hall Lane, one on Fletcher Road and I seem to recall there's one on Ribbleton Lane somewhere. Ain't any of them got a decent trade in audio gear*, though, your best bet for that is The Little Shop Of Broken Dreams, aka Cash Converters. I've scored a good mixer, most of the bits for a decent PA, complete set of Decks for my daughter and an assortment of things I've repurposed into other things from there. *They tend to carry the kind of easily portable property readily recognised as valuable by domestic burglars.

But actually, in my opinion, the best score turned out to be the Ramsa WR-S4416 mixer. I took it apart and gave everything a good cleaning. It's now fully functional and this thing sounds like butter (which I kind of expected) and is extremely low noise (which I DIDN'T expect). It's just what I needed to warm up the hard, cold digital sound of my HD24. I don't use the mic pre's (Great River and John Hardy take care of those duties), but for monitoring during tracking and playback this thing turned out to be the best $57 I ever spent. I have an Onyx 1620 that has been parked in it's case since I got the Ramsa. I haven't done any final mixes yet and I have read some not so good comments about the eq on the Ramsa (an area where the Onyx excels), so the jury is still out. But for monitoring during the tracking stage, the sound of this thing just kicks ass.
