Once - The Movie

O.K, so I'm a bit behind, and working my life away the last 3 years havn't kept me up to date on what has been out there.. But last night a friend brought the movie Once to our place to watch. I was in a TRANCE through out the whole movie. Sure, it was very indie, not too polished, acting was not great, and some of the shots could have been done better.. But then again, thats what gave the movie it's charm. It felt like I was walking with them through their lives..

And when they went into the studio for the 1st time.. I could relate to that, when I walked into a studio, and didn't have an idea on what was going on..

Just had to share this.. After a VERY tough week, this just made me look at life again and smile!

Hmmmm not going to believe this but I also watched this film this weekend and was going to post exactly the same titled thread! I enjoyed the film a lot, have that ballady song stuck in my head. I was going to ask if it was anyone's studio from someone on GS. Enjoyable film which a lot of people are going to hate but **** 'em. I think the actors wrote the music.

Most of the songs were written by the 2 of them.. They are apparently full time musos.. I simply love the music.

BTW.. Love the Springbok on your avatar.. Good spreading the love esp. after Saturdays series win!

I just put it on my Netflix queue. I haven't seen it yet of course, so I can't say for sure. But I'd imagine that anyone who would like this kind of thing would really like The Commitments.

It's a favorite film of mine. It's a great movie for musicians. And, interestingly, the young actors in the movie are actually playing all the music as well, and the difference is obvious relative to many movies of this type. Folks like us don't have to cringe when we see someone obviously not playing what we are hearing.

Watched this one tonight. An absolutely sublime movie. I loved it completely. It feels so natural and organic and the music is incredible and moving. I completely recommend it.

one of the best movies i saw last year! the songs are sooooo good! glen hansard is amazing: you should check out his band "the frames", alot of the songs on the once soundtrack are acoustic versions of songs from the album "the cost". "falling slowly" (among others) was on repeat on my ipod for months after i saw this flick...! and the movie itself is so touching and human: would recomend it to anyone. the scene in themusic store is one of my all time favorite cinematic moments!

And you know the "guy" star in Once was the guitar player from The Commitments :-)

Yeh, it took me a bit to recognize him with the beard, but I kept thinking, I know this guy.

IMO,

Once mos def stands head and shoulders above most rock/music films: not pretentious and full of itself, it lends itself to see the 'artist' as humans, and encapsulates what 'hope' and thoughtful insight into what many emerging artists often experience.

That said, I don't care much for the material. It seems monotonous and without enough chordal movement and melodic variation. Then again, I don't care for Tool, or a great many other groups that draw millions, so YMMV...

Same here, it kind of freaked me out when I put it together as those movies were done so many years apart.

To me, Once was such a sweet boy/girl story that brings out the emotion of "what if" to just about all of is. Add to that the great music and it was just so awesome.

Hey Dean, sorry to sidetrack, but don't you have an Emery Microbaby? I'm saving my pennies for one.....want it so bad!

Yeh, I do have one. It's really nice. I recently got a Vox Nighttrain from selling off the remainder of my plugs and a few other things. So I kind of have a nice range coverered there between the two.
