Kenny Aronoff @ Burst HQ

We had the pleasure of tracking Kenny Aronoff yesterday on 4 songs for one of our artists.
What an incredible player and great guy.
I'll post some audio as soon as we make progress on overdubs.
I thought some of you might enjoy these pics and slutty stuff...

He played his Tama Starclassic kit, with 12" and 16" toms.
We used his signature series snare (Tama) 5x14 and were pretty thrilled with the vibe.
Tuned up, tuned down, we had lots of room to play around tonally.
Coated Ambassadors on everything, except one song where we changed the snare to a Coated Emperor.
Cymbals were Zildjian 18" Med Thin, one K, one A. 21" rock ride. Bright hats, I forget which.

We used our Spider pres, as well as API 512s, Vintech X73s, 1272s, and Sytek.
We just got some new limiters and toys from Vintage King (thanks, Mike!), so on various elements we were slamming
Pye Limiters, Inward Connections TSL-3, and the Thermionic Phoenix... trying a few things out.
Maybe another thread on those items someday.

Mics:
Kick - SM91, Beta 52
Snare - Beta 57, C414 under
Toms - SM98s
Overheads - AT 4051s
Behind Kenny's Head - Korby (67 capsule used)
FOK - R121
Near Rooms - Lawson 47s
Hat - AT Pro37R

I'm going to try and post more on this project as we go through it...
we're pretty excited about the artist (Owen Sartori) and his songs.
More soon!

I've met Kenny a few times and let me say he's one of the nicest "pros" I've met! Super patient and not big headed AT ALL. He'll tell you all the stories you want and never seem big headed.
Nicest guy in the world.

Very cool!

You mentioned Pye limiters, were these originals or Korby reissues. Impression?

Kenny's setup always trips me out... the high and horizontal cymbals... that's pretty cool for separation... did he have an extreme tilt on the snare too? Not hitting shot's but hammering dead center?

solid mofo. Wired naturally to the gills too. Love to hear the tracks!

Yeah, they are some killer originals racked by Vintage King. Pics of our new racks are attached (Pyes are in rack 2, middle).

I am pretty blown away. We had the Inward a few days before and we're grooving on it pretty hard, but the Pye just made things explode. Thick and vibey as hell. I need to do a full report on these new toys soon, but we're having too much fun and have some deadlines to meet this month!

He had a fun new prototype snare rim, with a flanged FLAT edge on it. I should have grabbed a photo, but was too pumped to just be recording him! It was interesting, and combined with his Tama signature 5x14, the backbeat was steady and powerful... but like all great players, no matter the instrument, you realize very quickly how much of their sound is due to THEM and their hands/heart.

I will certainly post some music as soon as it's listenable... I mean the drum tracks alone are incredible, but I'm wary of posting a naked Aronoff groove on the net to be sampled and used without credit or permission from him... it's my first time with him and I love him to come back, so I don't want to piss him off and abuse the connection! We actually had him play single notes of each drum after each song, and he joked about us putting out a Kenny Aronoff sample CD as soon as he left town!!

Great!
One of my idols!
He keeps smieling no matter what he plays!
I first saw him on a gig with the The Smashing Pumpkins and I was impressed!
I want to look like him behind the set! Totaly relaxed!

finally something to hear...

So we're finally wrapping up this project, and I thought some of you guys might want to hear one of the tunes Kenny played on. He's on "I Knew You'd Come Along" by Owen Sartori, the first song you hear at my myspace page.

Rough 90 minute mix, so keep that in mind. We're headed to IPR (MN) to mix with Tom Tucker in a few weeks... he'll be mixing a few songs there, and we'll be wrapping up the rest of the mix here at Burst HQ before heading to LA to master with Gavin (at The Mastering Lab).

Enjoy!
