I am booked for the year!

As an independant producer, this is very excitng, enriching and rewarding for me and a huge load off considering I am moving across the country to a new state in 8 weeks! To buy my first home nonetheless!

Last week I signed a $12,000 contract to produce 6 songs in 4 months. Standard 4 points, 50% upfront and a monthly accounting schedule that guarantees my cash on an monthly basis. This keeps my ass clean and covered. The artist here in California will fly out to finish vocals in the new studio.

Ironically, when I was lookng for work the first time we decided to buy a home out of state I was introduced to a brilliant young Artist in the Austin Area. I did a couple of scratch tracks for her and we spoke several times. She flew out here to California to meet face to face and stay with me and my wife. We worked for 2 days in the studio and the energy was really great and the connection was just awesome...So... We have negotiated a full album deal, with the actuals to be signed in 3 months.

Both artists are extremely talented and I feel honored to continue working on my craft and survive.
Amidst these two bodies of work, requests for single song productions (Which is great BnB for me) has been heavy. Right now I don't even have the time for those gigs. (When it rains!)

Either way, It just feels great to work in my passion and survive! (And upgrade the studio a little!)

Thanks for letting me share!! Here's wishing all of you mega success and prosperity!

P&B,

Congrats.

I'll also say that it's also very instructive for me to see what the deal looks like that you've crafted with the artists. I haven't read a lot of threads on that topic and just your few words just gave me a ton of ideas on how to approach billing that seem both reasonable and advantageous to both parties...

Always so happy to see someone get to do what makes them happy. Especially when it's music making.

Thank you all for the thumbs!!! That is super cool and ultra appreciated!
I know alot of folks here know how stressful and disturbing this craft can be when there is no work. God knows my wife does!

With independant records or self-financed albums, flexibility is a big help. I think you can turn an otherwise 'on the fence' client into a deal.
I have always gotten 50% upfront even on one song (at a time) shots, which has been my lions share of work for the past 3 years. Monthly payments (as opposed to the remaining balance when the project is done) is easy for everyone to budget into reality. I rely too much on the money I make to risk holding a finsihed product for a broke label or artist. I am too broke myself!

I wish! Who knows one of these records could blow up...that is always the hope.
In reality it doesn't add up to much unless the record sells really well (which has nothing to do with me) I usually end up with mechanical royalites as well as I often co-write when I produce. Still got to move alot of of CD's before much trickles in.
This first deal has a clause for the artist which allows for x number of albums to be sold before any royalites begin accruing (The flexiblity again) this way he feels he can recoup a little faster.
I think the biggest benefit is the act of doing it. It leads to meeting more folks, and getting more work and getting your name out there.
