I am starting a studio!

Going against my better judgment, I have decided to start a small recording studio.

Part of me is saying that this may be the most foolish thing that I have ever done, but I just love recording. It seems that the odds of getting a day job working at a studio are slim so I might as well just open my own.

So far I have this for gear: TAC Scorpion 24x16x2, Dual 1.25 G4, 002R, TC powercore, DP 4.5, Ashly SC50 compressor, NS-10, Event TR-8, Blue Baby bottle.

Right now I am hunting down mics and some more ad-da for my system and I might get pair of RNC and a few nice mic pres but I am not in a rush.

This is going to be great or a huge mistake, we will see...

Congrats on the decision. I'm dropping some money into my studio as well and it's not something I'm looking at as a "wise buisness investment." In general I like to be very cautious about where I put my money and I like to think it's going to appreciate it some way or another...but this is just a labor of love for me.

Few things even begin to make me as happy as making and recording music...

Have a great time with the studio and make some great records.

It can work if you already have clients and want a space of your own to work out of- The problem most run into is the 'build it and they will come' attitude.... Most of these wind up going under and selling their gear for alot less than they paid for it. That being said, good luck!

Don't worry. It's like that saying "1000 monkeys randomly typing at 1000 typewriters could eventually write Shakespeare".

1000 posts and sooner or later, there will be a common ground somewhere.

build it with cash only and be very restrictive in what you actaully buy vs what you absolutely need.

ya, I am sure that I will be bitching and moaning soon...Lucky for me I have been slowly acquiring gear over the past 3 years so it has not been too painful.

I have been working out of another studio but the owner has been a flake lately so I feel like it's time to go out on my own.

Good luck! At least you have been accumulating gear, instead of dropping thousands all at once. A lot of music comes out of Seattle so as long as you can publicize yourself enough, you should be able to get some business.

If you love to record then you should buy gear with yourself in mind while you shop for the studio.

If you are planning on opening a studio for 'business' or to make a living', I suggest you find someone to help you with a business plan or take a class...and have a reality check talk with a couple of local studios. Alot of folks are happy to share even when you are opening a similiar business.

The reality of day to day 'studio' work can take the zip right out of your love for recording if you end up recording shitty bands because that is the only work you can get...And that is a bonafide possibility bro.

It can actually jade you from the passion.

Besides the typical studio services,I also suggest you find, get, or make up a specialty that can be pitched. oh..and work on your people skills!
And buy about 4 pairs of More Me phones right away!

Although I make a living in the studio enviroment I do not have what it takes to do it for the general newspaper ad public. I salute all of those who pull it off.
All I can say is good luck and I sincerely wish you the best!!

Well there are a few options...

Put the crack pipe down and save your money if you think that you will have an easy time making a living from it.. cos its damn hard.

Give it a red hot crack and and limit yourself to a time frame and an exit stregy if it dont work too well... say like a yr or 6 months?

Put the $$ into a small cap equity fund and ride the wave... as you would be doing in a studio.

Be like me now an dmake it a fcuking expensive hobby and passion and have a 9-5 that pays infinately more than being an engineer?

just my .02cents.. or i should say now £.02 worth

wide options

If you did intend to earn money from it I'd say keep your options very "open" and find a niche.

Best of luck.

Quit your day job.

BUT
Get a new one at the local music store.
Any music store.
It will be a great source of potential clients, breaks on gear, possibly a loaner, practice time, knowledge.......you get the idea. It really makes a big diff.

As the studio picks up.
Work at the music store less.
In many cases, you will be a benifit to the store as well.

In the end, you may be a successful AE with a great relationship with the local music shop.

OH! Try your hardest to NOT go into debt over this!!!!!!

Good luck!

I dont think I could say score- I'd say thats about what theyre worth....
Check it out- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

One dollar starting bid- And NO BIDS! That tells you something about just how shitty those steaming turds of a mic sound.

*Edit- Looks like its up to $40 on ebay now- So if you can sell it and make some cash, I suppose that is a good deal- Theres a sucker born every minute I guess.....But I wouldnt actually use it.

My thoughts exactly...had you actually heard a C1000 before you bought it? Not much of a score to me. sounds like you paid $20 too much for it. On a more positive note...you can find some good mics occasionally at pawn shops. Just do your homework first.

I find they sound better w/out phantom...

For $20 you could always use it as a hammer...but the build quality is probably not all it should be for use in that role...

I too have a semi-rational intense hatred for this mic....

cheers

Men...agree. I Had to record a quartet once, and they provided the Gear. The only two similar mics in the place, where....C-1000s, so I thought about using them for OHs. Once I grab one, I could not believe how cheap they felt!!...end up using a single 414 BULS in front....Perfect!!
...never even had listen to them...
