| A real college studio...in the works I'm entering my third years as the worship leader at Hope College in Holland Michigan. When I started I inherited a small but highly unusable studio in the basement of the chapel. It had tired Genelecs, crumbling auralex treatment, and a broken digi 002 rack. I've had to get by with my own gear for the most part these last two years. Interesting thing is that the school's recordist in the Music dept had consulted in the studio design some ten years ago, but he hadn't been allowed to use the studio. This particular recordist is an older gem. He produced two early Sonic Youth records and has worked with many others way back when--people like ummm...Tom Waits! It has taken us these two years to put a plan together, but a few weeks ago the administrators gave us permission to move his brand new Audient ASP8024 (its a sweet little 18 channel version used for demos through VK) into my space and we have permission to pitch capital requests for next year to buy microhones and new monitors so that I can take mine home! And even more presently exciting is that we have permission to use what is left in our budgets to pay for a new wiring design of the room, patchbays, channels to the mics that are flown upstairs in the chapel etc... I did spend a couple grand on GIK acoustic panels last year. So, now we have the beginning of a room that we can actually use for instruction. Maybe in a few years we will have enough student interest to pitch a BFA in audio to the curriculum committee! It is all very fun--makes my worship gig much more interesting. If you can help me spread the word around, I really need to sell a list of gear we aren't using. I don't have the time to sit on this stuff and will consider any offers. I really need to move the mackie and A&H boards. Thanks guys |
