I just bought a Cello!

I finally decided to buy a Cello. I have been wanting to learn for a long time now. Can't wait to get started!

Same here, except this cello was in my wife's family for a long time. I'm eager to learn it. Hard part's gonna be the bowing.

Have been thinking of this for a while...how much and what brand did you go with?

Excellent, congratulations. I started playing the cello when I was 43 (1992) and it's been most rewarding. Not sure how seriously you plan to get into this, but I hope you're prepared for a fair amount of work.

You'll probably find some useful info on my Cello page:

Ethan Winer's Cello Page

Be sure to see the article In the Express Lane for some good practice tips. It's linked toward the bottom of the page.

Good luck with it!

What's a cello?

disclaimer, I'm an orchestral bassist and we don't look up to often.

que?

Do you mean I blow into it or the cellists blow into it?
either way it shows I need to pay more attention at work.
Problem is every time I look up I see an angry man with a stick, looking down is safer.

Two people blow into the cello - one from each end.

Yes, that angry man with a stick is me. I always glare at bass players. (Even though I'm also a bass player.)

A cello is like a violin - except it burns longer.

As a professional double bass player, I consider such statements a slippery slope.

i went to conservatory for doublebass but have been playing bass guitar pretty much since. got myself a 'cello this year and it's fantastic. i realize more how bass lines were principally written for the 'cello, Beethoven's symphonies for example. the notes just sit under the fingers, waiting to be played - well, compared to the double bass.

long tones are your friend, whether you're learning a wind or stringed instrument! play a two-octave scale, metronome at 40 BPM, eight clicks per note
