| New microphones! So I just got a pair of the new Sennheiser MKH8000's to test - both the 8020 and 8040 capsules...using them on a chamber group tonight as well as some other acoustic/classical groups over the next few weeks. Really stoked for them! Also, my Cascade Fatheads just came in -- ordered the stereo pair. Tried them out on acoustic guitar this afternoon...sounds really great! Needed a bit of sculpting, but takes to EQ very nicely! |

| I don't, but we have a pair of Royer 121's where I work. Going to try a shoot out at some point soon. It's a bit slow this week. |

| So I've had a chance to check out the MKH8040 cardioids (our 2nd omni capsule wasn't shipped...just came in though). I REALLY like the transient response of these mics. My Schoeps sounded dull in that aspect compared to the Sennheisers. The other thing I really liked about them was their ability to pick up sources from a good distance with clarity and great stereo placement. I also did a direct comparison to a pair of 4011's in an NOS configuration. After matching levels (the Sennheisers were about 7.5dB HOTTER), the 8040 cardioid capsules had a very similar quality to the 4011's...not indistinguishable, but definitely in the same area. I'll have a report on the omni's in the coming weeks as well as my thoughts on the Fathead pair. |

| That's good to hear! Which Schoeps do you use? Did you think the Sennheisers were faster, or brighter? -SD

| I was using the Schoeps CMC6/MK4 pair. I thought the Sennheisers were definitely faster, but not brighter, necessarily. I'd be able to give a more definite answer there if I used them both on drum overheads. |

| Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm now officially interested in the Sennheisers! They look cool too. -SD

| Have you ever used Beyerdynamic MC930s? I'm wondering how you might characterize the 8040s to them. -SD

| Haven't tried those, but yes, the Senn's look great...LOW PROFILE. They're half the size of one of my Schoeps!!! They're great choices for permanent installations where having low profile mics are key. |
