Journey is back and better than ever

Their Revelation CD not only has great songs and good guitar playing on it, but for it's $11.99 price, you get a 2nd CD where they redid the classic hits, and there's more. A DVD of them in concert with their new singer...all for $11.99. Neil found his new singer on youtube and he does sound like Steve Perry. Not as close as the other guy but with his youth, he adds a new energy to the band that the 50 something band members seem to feed off on stage. Someone just has to tell Neil to turn down the effects on his guitar. It's not the 80's anymore. Thankfully he does not overplay the guitar; his leads always fit the song and are melodic. Some nice ballads and rockers on the new CD. I give this Revelation a 10.

Is the new guy the Filipino Steve Perry clone? Someone sent me a Youtube clip of him the other day and it made me strangely uncomfortable. I am sorry to disagree... Not in the same league.

New guy?

It just pisses me off that they gave Walmart the exclusive to sell it. on Walmart, worst company ever!

Anyway I went there to get it, they were out. Then he told me another store that had it. So I went there, heavy traffic, and he says, no, we've been out for a week.

So I ordered it online on Walmart's web site. Maybe I'll see it soon? I love Arrival with Steve Augeri. And Kevin Shirley produced that as well as the new one, so I have high hopes.

Well if you listen to both and say which one sounds more like Steve Perry, well of course it's going to be Steve Perry. I never said Steve was not as good, it's just that they have a new singer that can hit those high notes, has a good voice, and can rock the house. You may like Steve Perry's voice better, and that's fine. However I don't Steve Perry of today can sing the way he did 20 years ago. Same with Plant and Daltry.

I completely agree with you but I cannot deny the feeling I get when watching new Steve perform. It is like watching a twilight zone American Idol performance with the real Journey as his backing band.

If they were just doing greatest hits, I would feel more the same. However with new material and the new CD has great songs (it took about 7 listens to have it grow on me) I think we will see him start to see on his own.

Walmart Journey

I predict Walmart will become a record label, that will give them total control of the flow of CD's.

I was never a fan of Journey, I have been a fan of Neils guitar playing, saw him in the first Santana tour in early 70's, saw him in a local club with Paul Rogers years ago and it raised the hairs on the back of my neck it sounded so amazing.

So I'm looking at cheap DVDs in Walmart and notice they are playing Journey on all the HDTV's, it was some classic Journey tunes and the guitar is ripping and I'm thinking to myself "wow, the singer has gotton better with age" so I started watching the video and to my suprise, its the new Filipino singer. I think there is a roundness and sweet character that Steve Perry did not have. I'm not buying the new Journey package because they are not my thing but I'd never diss their new singer just cause they found him on YouTube or cause he's from Phillipines.

Far as I can tell, the band is back in business and better than ever.

Apparently, the classic rock band Boston found their new lead singer in a similar manner. I felt a lot of sadness when I heard Brad Delp had commited suicide, he had such an amazing voice.

Rock on.

In the YT video, the guy didn't hit the highest notes, every time. He wasn't off key for the other stuff, but when he got to those high notes, they were out of his range. He is good, though. Maybe he can be trained to hit those notes, or maybe not. I'll bet they autotuned him into pitch on the cover CD.

Easy there dude... I never dissed him because I saw the clip on utube or because he was Filipino. The clip reminded me of a bad American Idol performance. I couldn't care less if he was from the Phillipines, Detroit, or Mars - The performance gave me the creeps. Stepping in as the replacement to the lead role of a well respected band must be brutally difficult, especially when the tunes are well known. I'd be curious to hear what the new stuff sounds like.

Arnel rocks! I love the new Journey!

I've always been a big Steve Perry fan, but if he doesn't want the job Arnel is a frickin awesome replacement!

Jax... what you smokin' I've watched LOTs of live stuff from both Steve Perry and Arnel... and sometimes Steve strains on those high notes where Arnel makes them look easy! I ain't dissin either one, but you gotta give the dude his props!

I'm looking forward to seeing them live now!

I don't know, but maybe I should switch to whatever you're smokin'!

In fairness the only clip I've seen of Arnel was from the thread, but it does sound like he's struggling on the highs. I bet Steve also had trouble reproducing live what he did on the records, so yeah it evens out. Arnel does sound good.

I would feel old going to a Journey show, but at least I'd fit in.

If you are talking about the video clip I am thinking about, that was when he was singing with The Zoo band. The new Revelation DVD he hits the high notes and does it well. Again, Steve Perry is great, but if he does not want to do it. I think Arnel is the guy. I saw him in an interview and he has a humble attitude and from how he grew up to how he is now...his family and brothers who were on the street can now have a decent standard of living.

It seems likely that they recorded the "classics" first. I can hear Arnel's accent on the first part of "Don't Stop Believing" pretty well. The originals are really good and much improved in terms of not detecting the accent. I am not real sure of the purpose of re doing the old stuff in the first place. It is not like they did anything drastically different than the way the originals were done.

I am guessing it really helped him get the songs down. And inevitably, at the concerts the fans always want to hear all the old hits. Journey is a touring band, they never stop performing, through all of the singers, it really seems to be in there blood. I saw them in 2001 at Red Rocks in Colorado (with Augeri), and got to meet the guys after the show in a meet and greet (won the ticket on their web site). Neil Schon is on my top 3 favorite guitarists list, was great to talk with him for a minute.

I guess I should have said, why release them (the classics)?

I have to agree with you on Neil, he truly is an under-rated guitar player.

Neil and Craig Chaquico (former guitar player from Jefferson Starship) to me sounded like brothers on guitar. Both had great distortion, great rthy, and similar melodic guitar leads that fit the songs nicely.

I just wish Neil would cut down on his effects he currently using. He still sounds like a 80's guitar player with all the effects. Turn down the mix on your delay please! I would like to hear Neil play more acoustic guitar as well.

An 80's band makes a comeback with new singer and their new CD gets to #5 on the Billboard charts.....not bad, not bad at all. Thankfully the new CD is great. The greatest hits CD included is a nice bonus since I don't have any Journey CD's. DVD could be better but hey it was thrown in for free.

I have heard rumor that a new AC/DC record is in the works and may be a Wal-Mart release as well. I got Revelation the day it came out but my buddy is still trying to find it to no avail.

Collective Soul did the Target only release with their last release. It took me about three different stores before I found it. Also a really good CD FYI. I guess if you no longer have a label it can be a good deal to go this route...I know with Journey, we are talking astro bucks for the exclusive deal.

I have the new CD. It really is great! It starts out kind of rough (don't like cuts 1, 2, 4, and 5) but gets really good from there. Arnel has his own style, even with the similarities to Steve Perry. I like it.

Oh, and I bought it online on Walmart's web site. Had to add a couple bucks to ship it, but worth it. I'll hopefully never have to walk into a Walmart again.

.
You don't like track 1? The cd starts off with a great guitar groove and Arnel jumps into second gear from the first words out of his mouth. It moves, it has a great guitar lead, and good melody. I think it's one of the best songs on the record. Love tracks 4 and 5 as well. Oh well I guess you are allowed to have different taste. I am a guitar player and just love the rockin songs on the CD.

I found those tracks to be a bit too relentless for my taste. No room to breath. part of it is Dean's drums, I think.

The sound of this record is really good, especially comming off of a CD, which is even more of a challenge. Kevin is a great producer!

Steve Augeri came over and bought a piece of gear from me today, I had no idea it was him till after 20 minutes of chatting later.....

He's was a super cool and nice dude.

Funny thing is my friend was just telling me about this whole story of the new Journey singer just two days ago.
