Talking Ebay just gave me $2000!!!!

So I had a minor problem with a piece of gear I bought on ebay not too long ago and filed a dispute through paypal just to cover myself, but it turned out to be nothing and I closed the dispute a couple days later after working things out. No big deal. A couple of weeks ago I check my message inbox on ebay and find that ebay sent me a "courtesy coupon" for TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!

Here is the letter from customer support-

Dear Scott Benson (syborgstudios),

We noticed you recently filed a dispute about a purchase on eBay. We value your participation in the eBay Community and we're really sorry to hear things didn't go so well. To make it right we are sending the Courtesy Coupon below. To use it, you'll need a PayPal account. If you don't already have one, we're happy to help you set it up. Just call us at 1-800-717-EBAY.

We appreciate all the purchases you've made on eBay so far and hope you'll continue to buy on eBay for a long time to come. With this Courtesy Coupon, $2,000.00 of your next purchase is on us. To help make your future eBay experiences safer, we strongly recommend you use PayPal for all purchases.

With PayPal, eligible transactions are covered by eBay's Buyer Protection Program up to $200 at no additional cost, however, most transactions may be covered up to $2000. Find out more here or call us.

We have a special Customer Support line only for our most valued members like you. If you need help, call us at 1-800-717-EBAY (1-800-717-3229) 6am-9pm Pacific Time, 7 days a week. This phone number is only for members who have been invited to participate. Please call us if you ever need a hand.

Sincerely,
eBay Customer Support Team

The coupon said: "Use towards your next purchase on eBay - amount: $2000
This coupon is for one-time redemption. It may only be redeemed on a single purchase. Upon redemption, the unused balance, if any, is forfeited."

Well, a friend had a piece of gear I wanted and he needs to raise money for other gear he wants so I told him to list it on ebay and send me the link. He just did and the coupon actually worked! I'm flabbergasted! Has anyone else received one of these coupons?

It certainly has made the few times I've had problems with ebay transactions seem much more tolerable, thats for sure. The moral of this story is- actually read the ebay messages instead of just deleting them immediately (as I normally would have done)!

Are you sure it's legit and not some sort of a scam? Handing out $2000 courtesy coupons seems a bit excessive.

You could always just call eBay to confirm it, but it seems to make sense with his prior complaint- but certainly not the norm for eBay

Complain and get a $2000 courtesy gift? Gosh, I bet there has been millions of complaints. That would be BILLIONS of dollars they would have to give out. I'm having trouble believing this is legit.

If you read the bottom of my first post, you'll see that I used the coupon this morning to buy my buddys gear...It worked and was totally legit. Believe me, I'm as suprised as anyone!
I assumed it was a scam or had a bunch of strings attached, but its for real and was painless to use. So now my friend has more money toward the gear he wants, and I got a sweet Electrodyne 8X2 mixer for next to nothing!!!

I still am kinda in shock that it was on the up and up, which is why I'm posting. Like I said, normally I would have just deleted it thinking it must be bullshit, but luckily I didn't...

PS... I dont think I've EVER been called a "jammy bugger" before. I guess there's a first time for everything!

That is just crazy. Quick, put up a broken piece of gear and let me bid on it and complain when I get it.

That would depend on the value involved in the dispute and, more importantly, how much eBay have made off him (De chromium cob) over the years - they've certainly had a good few grand off of me...

Nope... I'm hip to that stuff. I've been on ebay since 1999 and here on GS since 2003 (and before that on the old rec.audio.pro newsgroup), so I am very aware of all those scams. The money went through, I got my confirmation from paypal and my friend got the money in his account.

if I were you I would not contact ebay about it, ask no questions etc. take the money and run, that has got to be a mistake but don't give it back if they say they contact you! Now everybody's going to be complaining to ebay so they can get their check:)

I just had a joker in Spain buy a delay from me... sweet talked me into it..
I gave in and sold it to him.. He just filed a complaint with Paypal that he never received it.. I shipped it to him a month ago and he never once contacted me to ask if and when it was shipped... Of course they don't give tracking for Spain.. just a customs receipt...Now my paypal account is on hold and I know this guy is up to some kind of a shimmy-sham Paypal

Congrats through Chrome... If they gave me one of these I'd buy a vacation or something

I'm surprised, but glad to hear that it was indeed legit. Put one in the win column for the consumer.

This is to be encouraged I think! Maybe eventually, if some one rips you off via ebay, the next week this very hot, and very friendly, young lady shows up at your place or something.

My dad has had a couple of 'no strings attached' £10 vouchers that worked in exactly the same way, but nothing like $2000! I'm sure it's as simple as someone typing an extra 0 or something...

ALWAYS Ship with a tracking number Fed-Ex and UPS have worldwide tracking numbers
All you have to do is provide Paypal with the tracking number and your off the hook.

My guess: In some countries (like here in Germany), "," is used as decimal point and "." as grouping separator, while it's the other way around in the US. I bet someone in an offshore support center entered "20,00"... in any way, congratulations. And on a personal note, serves 'em right

I read this thread last night and was blown away (and slightly hopeful as I recently had a bad experience). I just logged on to ebay and to my delight had received a courtesy coupon for being a 'star ebayer'!! Psyched? Amount: £2.50 ($5). Bummed.

Did PayPal still collect 2.9% of that $2000 from the recipient when you spent it?

Make sure you spend it all in one transaction. The ebay terms said you forfit the leftover balance in the case that there is a remaining credit on the coupon after the first transaction. Good luck!
