What do you know about Finland???

Good day all!

I'm looking for a little insight into the mysterious (to me) world of Finland (mostly the music business).

I have a song being released by a popular Finnish singer. All the bases are covered as far as ASCAP is concerned, but I was wondering what the differences are as opposed to the music business here in the USA. Also the tastes, media exposure, that sort of thing.

Thanks for any info and enjoy the day!

Congrats on the release.

The biggest difference compared to the US would be two things. First, Finland is a lot smaller with only 5 million people total. So with 15K units sold you´re going gold and 30K gives you platinum. So don´t expect to get filthy rich....but.....

..... a good cut with a major artist can generate good airplay for a long time and that pays fairly well, especially on the public service radio and TV channels.

ASCAP should recieve your royalties without problems. TEOSTO, which is the Finnish equivalent of ASCAP do a good job collecting and paying forward.

Second, a good portion of the music is dominated by domestic stuff in Finnish although english is coming more and more. Don´t be surprised if your song is translated into Finnish.

Most popular styles are rock, metal and domestic "schlager" although most radio is typical top40.

Non-musical, worthless info. Finland is a wealthy country with a high standard of living and top notch social wellfare. Home of Nokia and a couple of F1 world champions.

They are very big on cellphone technology, and the people tend to be very private. There was a story on 60 minutes a few years back..

Yes, interesting stuff. Keep us up to date. And watch out for those drunken hot tub parties. All that pent up anti-socialness getting loose.

Will do! The artist's name is Panu Larnos (2007 Finnish Idol finalist).

The song is "Unconditionally".

Now it's just wait and see...folks on this project feel Panu is at the threshold of stardom (perhaps even outside of Finland being that he's singing all the songs on his debut Cd in English)!

Thanks again to all!

I guess this is a small country with many faces...

And... as far as record sales goes, well we got only 5.3 million people so... Music business is really hard around here...

congrats anyways !!

LMAO!

Don't forget cultural relativity!

Here's my (probably biased) characterization of Finns:

Con's: shy, insecure, melancholic, self-denial (embarrased to enjoy luxuries), naïve, bad food, bad at selling, violent when drunk, boring unless drunk, patriotic (in an egoistic way), culturally backward, undiplomatic

Pro's: high work-ethic, exceptional practical intelligence, mathematically and geometrically talented, welfare state (solidarity among fellow citizens), best elementary education in the world, law-abiding, straightforward ("yes" means yes), punctual, honest, hygienic

Thanks for that! Very interesting stuff. Is the name Panu Larnos becoming "known" whatsoever? Thanks again!
