Vintech - seems like relatively good value

Anyone notice how cheap the 273 and 473 models are? $2295 and $3095, respectively, including the external power supplies. They include their so called 'essential EQ' - high and low shelving. Seems like a pretty good deal to me for some Neve clones with a bit of EQ. It works out to $1148 a channel for the 273 or $774 a channel for the 473.

Funny how Vintech doesn't get more love around here - they always sound good in shootouts, although I haven't tried any of their stuff.

BTW, I'm not trying to sell anything.

I did not had the chance to try one myself (Actually I have a 1073 DPA).
But a colleague did a stellar work with U67-Vintech473-1176 on vocals.
You can feel the Neve color and characteristics by listen to the CD.
It also shines on vocal shootouts samples I had listen to.

We've got the 473 in our studio. It's got a great sound for a modern pre with classic sound.
Only complaint so far is channels one and two have gotten a little finnicky on us. Just sent it back to Dallas @ Vintech and he's promised to repair it at no cost to us.

Customer service is great on these.

I've always loved the eq section of the X73. It provides nice wide bands of very Neve-ish frequency tailoring. They're worth the price just for the eqs.

If you have some heavy electric rhythm guitars that need some extra presence, bite and crunch, the X73 eqs will take good care of you. They're quite cheap when you consider what you'd normally need to spend to achieve this type of enhancement (read: AMS Neve 1073)

I've heard that the Averill 1073 eqs are quite good too, but they're considerably more expensive than the X73. This makes the X73 a serious bargain.

Is it true that the X73i provides the same overall sonic character / quality as the X73? If so, then that's a VERY serious bargain.

The pres in the X73... indeed good and indeed Neve-ish, but I still prefer my AMS Neve 1073DPA... I am quite fussy though...... many will be quite happy with the X73 pres.

This is true. It's hard to even call the 73 a bargain, it's just as good as the Averill. I own both... Definiately identical in almost every tonal difference.. The Averill has cooler switches...That's about it...So don't pay almost another grand for switches :) And also the way that the X73 is laid out makes it extremely much easier to service/mod/work on than the packed in Averill. Not that I'm bashing the Averill, I love mine. But, if I had done it again I Would have just bought two or 3 vintechs... I use the Vintech on Vocals... Like the Averill on guitars, the mids might be a little just tad bit more definitive or pushed than the 73 which is great because I play through an AC30 :)
