Thread Starter | I dig my TASCAM 48
Last weekend a couple friends and I got together by accident. Meaning, we all happened to be at the studio at the same time. It was going to be a rehearsal day but things quickly changed and we ended up going into "testing equipment mode" and seeing what we come up with. I haven't really been to Gearslutz since. I'm jamming now. Now, I haven't used a Studer 827 2", but man, I'm really digging the TASCAM 48 we're using. It's somewhat hissy. But I haven't cleaned the heads since we plugged it in. It needs calibration/degaussing and we're not hitting the tape hard enough, but man...We're running high-end pres onto it using good mics and it just sounds like nothing I've heard before. Now (again), I haven't really recorded to tape before but man it's a delight. It sounds so round and warm. When I first started running tests, I was kind of taken back because it sounded great, but not digital professional great that I'm used to hearing on the radio. So it was a real subjective shift on what 'good' was. I wasn't sure about TASCAM when I first got my reel to reel because so many people rag on it. But man, it beats digital recording. I'm sorry. I'm not anti-digital. And for all purposes in mixing, digital is really useful. But the TASCAM 48 in my mind sounds better than what I hear everyday. I can't believe I'm saying that, but I...wish syncing machines was easy. I will say that Portastudios are and will always be crap. I rather record my tracks with a refridgerator. Much cooler.
