| Yep. It seemed inevitable. In fact, I am surprised it has only happened now and not 2 or 3 years ago. Touring and merchandising seem like logical extensions of music sales, I suppose. But artist management is one gigantic conflict of interest, I would think just as significant as those which necessitated ASCAP and BMI. Something tells me that lots of people will go for it and in a few years there will be lawsuits and legislation needed to clear up the mess. ![]()

| Lives for gear | It actually has been happening for the past 2-3 years. For a while now, all Sony/BMG contracts require that the label controls the band's website. Bands without a lot of negotiating leverage are often compelled to sign publishing agreements with Sony/BMG publishing in order to get a record deal.....not to mention signing over portions of merch and touring income. Of course all the majors will follow. As CD sales plummet, it was only a matter of time before this became the new "standard". It is a scary proposition, but labels are defending their stance by arguing that as they are part of the season why artists become successful, (radio promotion, sales teams, financing videos, etc) they are entitled to a piece of the pie. I hate to admit it, but I can see their point. |

| I don't think many have to worry too much because labels are barely signing anything anymore.

| The point of a major was to get into the distribution pipeline and sell CDs. Why sign today? (Unless you have a way to flip the budget money in something non music related.) |

| But does anyone see the potential conflict of interest should labels move in the direction of management? That is what was also suggested in the post and that to me is completely objectionable. |

| Yet another example of desperately flailing while the ship sinks. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic how the majors can't see the real problems and the solutions.

| Lives for gear | if the labels buy up all aspects of revenue, pretty soon all musicians will become salaried employees of the record labels... Britney will be punching the clock like the rest of us... |

| Lives for gear | Having run a record label with major distribution for over 17 years, I can tell you for certain that the amount of money being generated by ITunes does not offset what is being lost by file sharing, burned CD's and MP3's....and while no one is mourning the implosion of major labels, let's not forget that there are plenty of amazing independent labels who are feeling the crunch as well. It all trickles downwards folks...less revenue equals smaller recording budgets. |

I've been one-upped! How true, how true. Back in the early 90s we had a bunch of major label interest. When the A&R guys came out (usually label big shots too) they came in bunches from 2 or 3 labels at a time. It was like dealing with stock brokers. I figured out if one liked you even if the rest didn't it started a bidding war but if one said they didn't like you no one would go out on their own no matter how much they liked you. You could go from the toast of the town to the bottom of the barrel in about half a beer if one guy thought the sky was falling. Fortunately I have a thick skull so the one time it actually fell it only caused a bald spot. | |
