Dance music is dying! Is it me, or is dance music dying a frigin' death? ![]()

| Lives for gear | no, it just smells that way. is it dying? i don't think it is personally, it has become very fractured and because of this you don't see club orientated tunes in the charts so much. Also, guitars have become trendy again, maybe it's a reaction to all the shit dance stuff that's been inflicted on us all, but that said, a lot of those dance production techniques are finding their way into other genres now. And also, what are you defining as dance? Does hip hop/r & b classify as dance? (personally i would say yes) Because both those genres show no signs of abating. Yes I know, we are all going to miss that horrible euro cheese when it eventually dissapates but don't worry, it'll be replaced by some other kwality product.

I guess i'm referring to dance as euro-cheese, disco-house, hardhouse (i don't think many people think of rap/RnB when they hear the phrase "dance music")......the stuff that you hear on the radio over here.........of course i know there's 5 squillion different scenes and off-shoots, many of which will survive for years. .....i don't really want dance to die, i just want it to become about as popular as say, folk music. I asked the question 'cause it seems like (over here), dance is disappearing very fast from the airwaves.....what's it like elsewhere?

there are people who grown up on '90 guitars and now are turning back, saying **** the "dance music" it's dead, let's have guitars again. But I think it's their personal music crisis, they are jurnalists so there is "dance music is dead" bubble on every corner. On the other side, the electronic scene is as powerfull as it never was on the composers side. Interesting things there and there and everyone want's to be released abroad (we are a very small pond - 1000 sold copies is success even for majors sometimes). HipHop is certainly on the horse... biggest sell ~5000 copies here. I don't know about rock, because I don't understand the "distorted guitar sound with out of tune singing or screaming"... I respect it, but just don't get it ;-). I have some Techno vinyl "mastering" here now and then, looks like these freaks have good times. No problem with selling their music. And yes I don't get this music too, but when taken as "sound" it is interesting sometimes. And yes, most techniques from "dance" music are spread into the major pop, but mostly it is very funny and lame.

excellent observation e-que. Snappy little groove btw. You may want to vary it up with the classic " *uhm**uhm*uhm*uhm* bdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDD fill executed on bar 8 just give that xtra "lift". (that would be the "roll" button if you'd like to avoid the progamming) IMO, dance music of the past 10 years has nothing on the classic disco of the 70's. Not to mention my ass looked SO good in those baby blue Angel Flights (That would be pre- skinny tie and muuuuuulay years.) I doubt it'll ever dead so long as folks want to get loaded and get their tribal mating dance on.

I don't think it's dying, but I don't think it was ever really alive in the states either - where I live (Denver) there has been one radio station that tried to play dance pop, and it was off the air in less than 3 months. Like Matucha said, a good release is a 1000, so can you even really consider that to be "alive"? I agree with e-cue that the *uhm* *tsk* *uhm* *tsk* is really played out, and if you call dance music euro-cheese, disco-house, hardhouse, which are all based on the *uhm* *tsk* *uhm* *tsk* format, then yes, that stuff has lost it's luster. I wish that stuff would mostly go away too . . . although I enjoy a tune like that once and awhile. I've never been to a rave in my life but I produce electronic music - mostly breakbeat, hip hop, and a little tech house type stuff. I try to stay away from the *uhm* *tsk* *uhm* *tsk* format because it does get mindless and boring. I think a lot of people who used to make "dance music", like euro-cheese, disco-house, hardhouse, have realized that it has a limited future because the music itself is limited, so they starting making other forms of electronic music - I think this is contributing to the "death of dance music". But I don't want the sound of it to go away! I would guess I'm in the minority here, but I love synths/electronic music because the sounds are different and unpredictable - there are times I hear a band that's a drum kit, bass, a couple guitars, and a vocalist, and no matter what they do or run their instruments through, it all just starts to sound the same. Don't get me wrong, I like most forms of old and new rock, but after I hear one song, I know what the rest of the CD is most likely gonna sound like. With elecrtonic music, the lead can be radically different every song, not just a dry guitar on one song, a distorted guitar on another, a guitar with delay & reverb on the next, a guitar with . . .etc. So, yeah, if you define dance music as euro-cheese, disco-house, hardhouse, it's dying - and it should. But long live electronic music that's pushing the boundaries of composition, sound design, and different production techniques!

I think (and hope) that dance music will get more attention from the major record lables. It´s usually a one man band with their own computer/studio. Doesn´t cost much to record/produce if you compare to i.e a rock band. This is probably called wishful thinking :) Disclaimer: I´m not a fan of euro trance/dance. I´m in to house music. /Jens | |

Ive seen this once before. In 1976 to 80 disco ruled and then boom Elvis costello ,the Clash ,Blondie, ect**New Wave was born !Guitars farfisas organs it buried that Disco Dance stuff in the ground. One thing you can be certain of in music guys !Rocknroll is always based on power and energy and it has no boundrys like dance music does,What I mean is it is very rare to see kids from the burbs buying into dance music .Don't ask me why?I run a studio and record Urban dance music with samples and Logic all the time although I do see a trend leaning very heavy to playing in basement bands again at a very young age! My son is 8 years old and just loves playing old bootsy licks form parliment as well as old Cream and old Zepplin .Guys we are about to enter a new wave revolution again trust me!!!!! I have lived through one so you better get your Mics and Mic Preamps dusted off its looks like live bands off the floor at once for a while again. Get em in and get em out!More cash anyway.

While we're all slipping the boots into dance music (nice one e-cue!), lets take it further...let's ban covers/remakes/interpretations/whatever they want to call them. Perhaps some new melodies may enter the culture at long last. Hopefully one of the GS community will know a radio network PD, and can bend his ear/will until the lazy sods who peddle this crap get a clue and leave the industry, or (shock horror) write a new tune. End of spray. Sorry Cheers, Tim

It so much bullshit electronic dance music which comes from the major labels.. it's just annoying.. I have the feeling I'm almost drowning in that shit.. Good music comes from people with passion and dedication..and this music will never die..be it techno, rock or anything else.. Indie Labels is where it's at..

Sorry folks, it's alive and well. Not sure why you would think it's dying. Besides, dance music is pretty big genre to just wipe off the map. The funny thing is I hear lots of people on these forums saying, there's nothing good from 'x' genre being released anymore - ITS DEAD. Well, I think you're all just getting old ![]()

Jazzius, I'll take that back. Modern jazz is dying a stinky played out death in the blind alleys of stacked thirds, pentatonic scales and monumental egos. Flame away jazz lovers.

"Dance music" as you call it, is far from dead. Some serious jugheads on this forum. I thought only Americans would write rubbish threads like this. You guys from Oslo should be ashamed. There's some seriously fine electronic music coming out of your neck of the woods and elsewhere up North. The underground is alive and well. And I'm not talking about some "euro-trance" type bullshit. Genres like hip-hop, Detroit techno, Jamaican dub and others have cross-pollinated and spread throughout the world. There is more interesting "dance music" out there (music that crosses every ethnic, geographic, stylistic, and cultural boundary) than most other genres combined. And it's not just some programmed drums and synths. Shit is deep with no limits. It just takes more than a superficial interest in the stuff to find the good stuff. That's like saying "world music" is dead. Using these general umbrella genre terms is pretty useless. Is rock music dead? BOOM.

Most people that say this music or that music is dead just means that it is not their music genre.. they will hear what is played bigtime and will reach them in the popular radio stations or with fancy videos... one can't make such a statement if you don't know the genre very well...and obisously the writer doesn't.. see all these people which are into this sound for many years or decades will tell you that dance music is alive..very alive... but these people usually don't listen to that major commercial dumb and soulless dance music.. asi i said...indie labels is where it's at...

Dance music pretty much saved all you asses and spawned more ideas and originality than rock n roll ever did. And btw I play guitar and love many a guitar band!! But honestly the original posters idea of dance music is rather ignorant. Theres nothing worse than a closed minded musician who labels all electronica with a dance rhythm as crap. What about New Orders Blue Monday. Is that crap? Did you just single out Mr Cheese and The Big Dancing Beans and think "Yeh that dance music thing is crap" Well its not on its way out. Its been here now since 1988 so thats twenty years next year. rock n roll lasted in its true form for about six. There must be something in it for each new generation to be turned on by it. you could go back to the disco era but ill take it from 88 when it really started happening in the UK. Like all great music it scomes from the UK Ho HO HO

Now we don't want to go into a fight between the music genres in this thread... ![]() We're basically sayin' one has to differentiate if one makes such a statement.... I wasn't meant serious from the original poster anyway.. Everybody can agree and live with that.. ![]()
