Need Help! Looking for a tech in the London area?

I started trying to build my own DIY SSL compressor based from Gyraf's website, ive stuffed the board and conected the power transformer and everything, its passing audio and theres no explosions when you power it up but its not compressing, the controls dont do anything and the power LED doesn't even light up.

As i am a complete newbie to this type of work i am not able to get this thing up and running and am looking for someone in or around london to help me sort this thing out, ive had it siiting in my room for about 6 months now and cant even stand the sight of looking at the darn thing.

Hi

Not exactly London (Milton Keynes, actually) but you could try Blake at blakeyboy-at-btinternet.com.

Just untangle the antispam measure!

I'd also recommend Blake Devitt - he maintains our Neve console for us and is a top bloke.

Hi

Indeed, many years ago I taught him most of what he knows about Neve... the rest he worked out for himself!

There's several folk that post here with the same teacher!

diy SSl compressor

Might well be worth checking the supply voltages first if you have a multimeter, a path to persue is that the power led is not working (ensure that it's the right way round!) If you are really really desperate I may be able to help, I'm about 30 miles NE of London (where in London are you?)

Hi Blake

I worked it out myself! (Must be a joke about pinkies and noses there somewhere!)

You were a red hot tech even before I met you!

Tooled Up, I think you issue lies with the control board. No Audio goes to the board all it does is control the timing of the circuit, hence why it will be passing audio, which stays on the main board .If it passes audio it means that both your audio VCA's are working, which is a GOOD sign and you are 90% of the way there!

Since the controls don't work and the LED is not illuminating I think you have a break between the control board and mainboard. This is easily checked with a simple multi meter set to continuity and connected between the main board and control board connections. I have a hunch that your positive rail isn't making it to the control board hence a lack of controls and the non working LED.

The connections are made via moulex connectors and I've had issues in the past where the mechanical connection isn't great and so I now ALWAYS add a tiny drop of solder once I clamp, just for an added bit of strength.

I hope you come right and if you don't feel like looking into my proposal I'm sure Blake will get you up and running.

Cheers

Matt
