Otari MX 5050 Mk II transport control repair?

I haven't run my Otari MX 5050Mk II in a while. It's a 1/4 " 15 IPS half-track 2 track mastering deck. It runs and plays fine. When I use the FF or REW buttons it goes correctly in the direction chosen, but it will not stop, with either the STOP button or the PLAY button. Then I have to turn the deck OFF to stop the tape at approximately the right place. I'm willing to open it up and fiddle with it. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do?

Reading your text I would suggest trying to find a maintenance engineer and let him fix it.
He will know how to "open it" and what to do next.
Good maintenance engineers do not fiddle with it, they fix it.
