Sony C38 48v mod?

Hey guys,
Just picked up a pair of original Sony C38's. Awesome condition, sound great, and a great price.

That said, I'm getting real sick of all the 9v batteries involved.

Anyone have plans for an internal mod or an external box so it can run on 48v?

I looked around a bit but all anyone is talking about is the C38b running on 48v. I did see that someone made an external box for a Sony C55 to accept 48v, maybe similar?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Assuming you don't have a "B" model (which already has P48 power support).

You could simply reproduce the power circuit in the C38B.
The complete service manual is here: http://www.coutant.org/sonyc38b/c38b-service.pdf
and the schematic diagram is on page 5.

I've done this for a number of these mics.

I build a simple two resistor to zener and cap rig on a 9v battery clip and plug it into the battery connector, then tack the other end of the resistors to the audio output leads.

It's completely reversible and cheap.

Two 6.81K resistors, a 9.1v zener and a 220uf/25v cap.

Yeah, I've done that two resistor, Zener and capacitor mod on some old ECM-C22 microphones. Seems to work fine.

Thanks for the awesome ideas, guys.

Dan, I'm not as savvy as I'd like to be in this department... could you offer anymore guidance in this project or perhaps photographs?

Thanks again. Really appreciate the insight.

Sure, once I get home from AES I'll rig one up and shoot a picture.

Yeah, I've got some pictures and a schematic.

If you send me an email from the GR website I'll
send the files to you via Yousendit.

Not huge, but a bit much for an email.

Happy Thanksgiving Dan!

That would be a pretty awesome thing to post, hint hint. I am lucky enough to have mostly C-37a's, so 48volts isn't enough- ha! But I think I still have some ECM-22's, 23's, 56's, etc. somewhere, and would be good to convert.

Best-
Jonathan
