Stripping Phantom Power?

Hey guys,

I'm working on a little project, and I am wondering if it is possible to tap or strip the phantom power from an XLR line to power an electronic device, while still maintaining a signal path (ideally not effected by the electronic device) for a microphone source. I've poked around the web a bit and can't seem to find anything on it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Sure its possible, that's exactly what is done inside phantom-powered mics....

Remember that you have 3.4k in series with the 48v supply. This leaves you with about 14mA for a total somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/2 to 2/3 of a Watt total that you can draw.

The easy way to do it is with a center-tapped transformer...

This has been well explored (by designers) and you can relatively easily power a low current circuit, like many direct boxes. The 6.8K resistors in series with 48V voltage source means you will be wasting a bunch of power in those resistors.

The question is what kind of power do you need V and mA? I have even seen DC-DC switchers used to convert the higher voltage, modest current supply down to a lower voltage at higher current (for say a DSP or digital circuit).

For a simple approach look at a few direct box schematics, for a switcher I haven't seen one of those published.
