Hakko 474 OMG

Doing a recap on the power supply and I only had some braid, so I went upstairs to my tech friend and asked if he has a hand desolder pump I could borrow. He said no, but I have this - and pulled out his hakko desoldering station. Set me up in my room and Oh - My - God..... I love all my vintage compressors, but this thing gets my vote for best piece of gear ever. So quick, so neat, even pulls top solder through the hole. Now I must save to buy one to do the modules in my console as I have about 4000 caps in the desk. Probably not new news to you techs, but I'm on a Hakko high.

Re-capping something of a rather pain in the butt right now.
Actually, no, haven't been able to to get to the step where I re-cap yet.
Where is a de-solder station when I need it?

http://www.dancap.co.uk/ are the hakko uk distro. Got some stuff from them a while back and they were helpful with great service. The stuff is quite steep compared to the US prices but very competitive against stuff from Weller here in the uk.

Reccommended.

hi Tom,

thanks for the link....£240 for the 808 seems a bit steep - especially as they are $170 (£90) in the US. Might wait for my next visit and pick one up there.

Consider the Den-on Instruments SC-7000, the best hand held de-soldering unit. Three tip sizes and it will pull solder out of plated holes. Most electronic techs in California use them (not audio guys) and at a recent Wescon components show, many of them came by the Den-on booth to say that it is the best.

looks good - but it's over £400 over here (about $700) which seems a bit steep - anybody know where I can pick one up (or the Hakko) in NYC - preferably manhattan ?
