ampex 351 as preamp

I have a pair of ampex 351 electronics that have been sitting in my studio forever looking cool but not operable. I was given these by someone who got them for free from a radio station that was tossing them out.

http://www.historyofrecording.com/ampex351.html

I know they are usable as preamps for microphones, so I'd like to get a power supply hooked up to them (and get any refurbishing done that will be necessary).

I'm in the San Francisco bay area... does anyone have any recommendations for where I can take these guys to get the work done? Obviously shipping 'em is not optimal...

Thanks!!

These don't make great mike pre's, the input transformer is not well enough shielded for high gain.
If it's one of the ones with little circuit boards that plug together, wiring can be a problem.
Just buy a good kit and assemble it.

While I appreciate your opinion, I think I'll try it and see what kinds of sounds I can get out of it myself. At this point, they are completely useless otherwise, so it's a no loss proposition.

Anyone have a recommendation?

The units might be more valuable if kept "whole". There is a group of Ampex fans who restore those old units and your stuff might be worth something for genuine parts if nothing else.
