Trident S20 Input Gain Issue?

I have a Trident S20 two channel mic pre. Both sides exhibit the behavior that the input gain from about 7:00 to 9:00 on the dial does nothing, then after 9:00 there is a big boost in gain and it works normally after 9:00.

Both sides have this behavior and I think they are both independent of each other so it seems "normal" for the unit?

Is something busted that wouldn't effect both sides or am I just missing some weird feature of the unit? (couldn't find a manual for it).

Thank you for replies!

I own one now and used to have another one, and they both did that.
Weird and annoying, but I still love this pre.

It's normal for that unit cause it's a crappy design. That preamp has about 10 dollars worth of parts in it if that and the big flaw is the fact they don't know how to design preamps. The design calls for a reverse gang pot and if you used a reverse gang pot you would get a linear volume curve, but reverse gang pots cost money to make and aren't available in small quantities or normal values, so they just used a normal pot and that's the reason you get the weird swing of gain in the pots rotation.
