Bryston 3B-ST THX woes

Hey everyone,

First time posting pretty much, long time reader.

I recently bought a Bryston 3B-ST-THX off eBay (Bryston 3B-ST THX 2 Channel Version Rare 12V Trigger Free Shipping USA CANADA | eBay). It's in pretty immaculate physical condition aesthetically, but something seems to be wrong with my setup. Just wondering if you guys can help troubleshoot.

I hook up 2x NS-10s to the poweramp. I am using 12-gauge speaker wire from here: Amazon.com: GLS Audio Premium 12 Gauge 50 Feet Speaker Wire - True 12AWG Speaker Cable 50ft Clear Jacket - High Quality 50' Spool Roll 12G 12/2 Bulk: Electronics

I use just the bare wire ends for both the poweramp and the speakers.

For the XLR ins/outs I am using Mogami cables that work fine.

Anyways on to the issue...

In individual (stereo) operation, after a few hours of operation, sometimes sooner, and the amp starts cutting in and out. It will work fine for about a minute, and then shut off for about 10-15 seconds. It just keeps doing this. I haven't really found a solution, except that if I operate it in bridged (mono) mode it works fine.

I tried pointing a fan at it and keeping it cool, I removed it from the rackmount and set it by itself - none of this has helped.

The poweramp will click whenever it stops working, and click whenever it kicks back in. I can't tell if this is a fuse that needs to be replaced or what. Sound still faintly comes through the speakers when the sound cuts out, and it's heavily distorted.

Again, the poweramp works forever and works well in bridged (mono) mode.

I opened it up and there wasn't any dust in it or anything that would cause heat issues, etc... Also the heatsinks aren't really that hot or anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated. It is supposed to have 6 years left on the warranty, but I don't have the original receipt or original packaging. I haven't called Bryston yet about the issue.

Any ideas? I don't think it's overheating because it works fine in mono. But, I'm not entirely sure, because it usually takes at least an hour or two before the amp starts cutting out.

Thanks everyone.

EDIT:

After about 7 hours the bridged mono started doing the same thing. I put a box fan on it on high and after about 10 minute it is going continuously. Looks like it's a heat problem.

Any recommendations for quiet rack coolers for my desk?

Hi,
The clicking that you hear is probably the relay on the protection circuit cutting in-and-out. You should definitely contact Bryston about this. They are very committed to keeping their gear in factory condition. I'm pretty sure that the warranty is just by serial number so the bill-of-sale etc. is not an issue.
Having said that, there's no way that a 3B should be getting that hot with a pair of NS-10's as a load. It's possible that your set-up is causing the problem, in particular a HF oscillation that you can't hear but the amp is working pretty hard to amplify. Do your tweeters get hot?
A few other tests:
1) Disconnect the input wiring, put the amp in stereo mode, hook up the speakers (no stray bits of wire, right?) and leave it on. It should stay on indefinitely. If not, it's an amp problem and should go to Bryston.
2) If the amp doesn't shut down, the problem could be with either your input wiring, or your interface.
Best,
Ike

Thanks, Ike. I'll try that.
