Martech MSS-10 noise problem

I have a Martech MSS-10. I want to use it for vocals but I can't because the 30db position on the gain switch introduces a hiss sound. I've sent it to Martech twice and they have no idea what I'm talking about. Their insistence that my pre is not broken made me think, maybe there is some anomaly in the design of the pre that makes it noisy at 30db; maybe it's supposed to be this way!

I have attached an audio file of me speaking into my Neumann KM84 while switching the gain around to showcase the noise I'm referring to. I used a KM84 because that's what they said they used when they were unable to detect the noise.

Martech MSS-10 users, please let me know what you think about this and if your unit exhibits similar noise characteristics. Thank you.

Is that noise present with a mic connected? Are you listening without a mic connected?

To accurately hear the true noise floor you first need to terminate the inputs with an appropriate load. Solder a 150 ohm metal film resistor from pin's 2 and 3 on a male XLR connector. Now you have a proper load to listen to preamp noise.

Good thinking, Jim. Thank you.

The noise occurs with any microphone plugged in. I first noticed it with my C12 and then again with my TLM171.

I find it unusual that there is more noise(hiss) at 30db than at 50db of gain with a mic plugged in. What do you make of that, Jim?

That's what I thought too, Jim. Unfortunately, they have done nothing but blow me off.

I'd sell it. It's not like there are no high quality mic preamps to choose from.

Like the Gambler says,

"you got to know when to hold 'um, know when to fold 'um".
