SONY DPS R7 - How to OPEN one????

Okay - yes I KNOW this seems like an impossibly basic question that should almost be ignored but I've spent a good hour after having removed pretty much EVERY screw on the outside of the casing and STILL can't seem to get any closer to getting inside this thing. Is there a TRICK to it??? Is there some secret latch or something? I checked the manual - nothing... even the V77 service manual but there's nothing on opening the case up. I've NEVER had such a hard time opening up a piece of rack gear.

My R7 has a funky display and I need to figure out if it's an issue of adjustment or replacing (easier said than done I'm sure)... but rapping the thing on the outside seems to be effecting the display - so I think a little inspection is in order.

Hi,

like you say this should be easy, just take off the rack ear reinforcers and remove the obvious screws on the upper back panel above the connectors, on the sides and on top behind the front panel.

The lid/top of unit just slides off over the back connectors and away from the front in one piece.

Maybe yours has become jammed, ease it off gently resting the back panel on your knee (don't drop it!) making sure that both sides are sliding down at the same time, it sticks if you pull one side too far ahead of the other. sometimes it needs a gentle knock or tug to get it moving.

There's no catch or anything!

Hope that helps

YEP!!! you're right! Bravo and thank you. I just did the gravity thing and it slid right off. I guess the tolerances were a bit tighter than i'm used to and I got thrown off by the fact that there didn't seem to be ANY play in the cover at ALL - so i thought maybe there was a weird tab somewhere I wasn't hip to.... anyway- thanks much for that!

How crazy. I magically fixed the thing just by removing the display connector and resetting the unit... good to know. Need to do a battery upgrade though. Anyone know anything about best practices removing the button cell?? seems to be spot welded in to some hard wired tabs... I'm guessing desoldering won't work and it has to be twisted off the board or something (not super comfy with that!)??

Those tabs are permanent to the batterycell and you should not attempt to desolder them....you´ll risk explosion of the cell due to the excessive heat.

Instead, you must desolder the tabs from the underside. There is a separate lid on the underside. Open that and you should be able to desolder the battery more easily.

Okay-cool. Thanks for the tip - I probably wouldn't have tried to desolder the batter but simply cut it off probably but removing the sub board and desoldering from the underside sounds better. I just picked up some AA battery holders to mount on the rear of the unit!

You can get nice battery holders for mounting that on the board directly.
You then can keep using lithium cells and do not have to fit ugly looking AA batteries on the back of the unit.
Link to get you the idea: Coin Cell Battery Holders

Do not solder or cut the now fitted battery ! You will regret it....

Thanks - too late though... luckily I do not have the unit mounted backwards in the rack!! I'm not really showcasing the back anyway... going to feed wires out of my D7 to the same battery pack too... just for the sake of killing two birds with one stone!

I'm kind of a fan of the utilitarian hack though...

Mounting a battery clip on the motherboard is not THAT difficult and looks more professional to me than a set of external batteries at the back of the unit.
Seems to be more work to me as well....

Oh i'm SURE it's less professional looking... but the next time the batteries die I won't need to crack it open again... won't even need to disconnect it... just swap the batteries. easy peasy.
