Reviving HR824s

Both of my HR824s lost their ability to use the woofer at about the same time. Tweeters are going strong, no woofer. Kind of a strange coincidence. I have treated them well, always have them hooked up with 1/4" balanced inputs on a Muiltiface or a Yamaha MR816x, so I don't think the issue is from something I physically did. Messing with the input sensitivity potentiometer in the back though, I was able to get some woofer sound out of one of them for a while that way, but now playing with that gets me nowhere.

I got the service manual for the HR824s and I'm about to open them up to mess with the pots or anything that may seem obvious, but my experience with electronics is mostly from 15 years of computer repair, so I'm not an electronics repair guy, though I understand a little of it.

I was hoping for some advice before I open these up and start screwing around.

I found a Fixya of someone mentioning they used oil contact treatment on sw3, describing it as a low pass switch, saying it had bad contacts. I assume he's referring to the Low Freq. Switch. The quote is here:

Quote:
sw3 on the rear is low pass sw is bad contacts, c61 and oil contacttreatment,ok.
Not sure if c61 refers to the service manual somewhere or if that's something else I need to buy and use. I'm also not sure if it's okay just to use the oil contact treatment on the outside of the unit. I opened it and don't see a way to apply the liquid to the inside.

I had a woofer go out on one of my HR824s and GlenTennison fixed them up for me. It was a connection issue probably like yours. He is a former Mackie engineer from back when they still made their stuff here in WA. (Mine are original units from their first production run.) You might try PMing him for advice.

Thanks Lights,
I'm going to go pick up some CRC Cleaner that some guys recommend using for pots and switches. If that doesn't work I'll probably PM GlenTennison. My repair guy in town just retired.

Successful Fix

It was a contact problem.

I got a can of CRC QD Electronic Cleaner (Quick Drying Formula), powered off the monitor, sprayed it into each switch and pot, played with each switch and pot about 10 times, put it outside to dry for about 20 minutes, turned it on, and it works fine. Repeated with the other monitor with the same results.

I may still need to contact your friend to work on one of the speakers, as one tweeter sounds different from the other, but for now I'm up and running again. Thanks, Lights.

Glad it was something simple. I think the original HR824 is a great speaker... they just need a little TLC when they push 20 years old!
