diagnose my fuzz pedal sound? (audio clip inside!)

hello,
i was wondering if someone here could give me some guidance on a particular issue i'm having with my mxr classic 108. here is a sound clip of the problem:

on my MXR Classic 108 pedal the distortion sounds okay when the fuzz knob is way up, but at low-fuzz settings there is this distinctive high crackle that sounds like it's on-top of the guitar's sustaining sound, which has a strange irregular decay. i'd prefer to get a warm and smooth decay from a fuzz pedal.

first i thought it was the speakers/pre in my amp reacting badly to the signal, so i played with output levels from the pedal, and also tried a different amp... no luck. it's a new pedal, though i did buy it used.

is this just what silicon pedals sound like? does this pedal just kind of suck for low fuzz sound? what would you recommend?

if you think you know, what exactly is causing this?
