I buy most of my components from Mouser. I see them suggested often for parts all over the web. Really good prices: Mouser Electronics - Electronic Components Distributor

+1, and never heard of Digikey. I'll have to check them out. Any specific parts you like to source from them?

There are a bunch of places to buy components.
mouser
digikey
newark
futurlec
parts express
small bear electronics
allied electronics
and probably about 1000 more....

housing/enclosures can be found at Par-Metal, or just check ebay.

...and the answer depends on where in the world you live. Above answers assumes you're usamerican. If you post your location in your profile, such questions can be answered better. And btw, for diy audio stuff, make sure to check out the forums at GroupDIY - We break stuff...and occasionally make stuff.

I'll second Digikey and Mouser. I bought some stuff from Newark but don't like their site and they screwed up one of my orders so I don't buy from them anymore.

Mouser is nice, I get almost all my tube repair stuff there. Plus, lots of the parts come in little unmarked ziplock baggies that can be reused for spare parts, parts groups, etc.

Digikey is my preferred when they have the parts I need, but mostly because they also ship with USPS. USPS is always the fastest for me, and the cheapest. The lowered shipping cost means I can get a handful of parts now instead of feeling like I need to wait for a big order. But it obviously depends on your location.

Mouser do VCA chips and they do the Silonex optocouplers. There's a "Joe Cheap" schematic online for a Joe Meek style optical comp, very few components in the signal chain, the sidechain is a little trickier however.

I'd probably recommend the Joe Cheap first as the audio path is so simple, once you get your head around doing sidechains I'd try more elaborate projects!

Mouser ships USPS also.
I prefer USPS for everything as well. It's faster, less expensive, and they don't throw your packages over your fence into your yard like Fedex and UPS do. Who says the gov't cant do anything right?!

They do?! Last time I got stuff from them I had to pay the minimum UPS fee (around 10 bucks). Cool, looking forward to my Mouser buy now =D

Yup, on the dropdown menu for shipping choices they have USPS Priority Mail. I order from them several times a month, and always use USPS.

Awesome! Seriously can't say how happy that makes me. I despise shipping costs. Stopped shopping at Newark after they eliminated all the quantities from my order (I'm always very sure to check before confirming the order) and I had to reorder everything. Ended up paying ?$25 shipping for a $12 order. Had no proof that they screwed it up so I didn't call customer service, but that one still gets to me.

Anywhos, yes, excited.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Newark either. They've got the absolute worst search interface of any component site I've seen. Mouser and Digikey's search interfaces are like driving a well engineered sports car. Using Newark's interface is like driving a rusted out 13 horsepower 1957 Fiat 500.

Unfortunately as far as I know Newark is the only game around for EAO pushbutton switches, so I do have to order from them occasionally.

I wish I could combine the Digikey and Mouser search engines. Both have things I like a lot that the other doesn't have.

That's really saying something, most of them make me feel like I'm simultaneously in 7 different Concentration Camps whilst also partaking in (and winning) the International Forehead Smashing and Nut Crushing contests.

O.k, it's not THAT bad, but they are pretty awful.

I suppose it just depends on how much you use them. I typically order from Mouser and/or Digikey several times a month...for the last 5 years or so. I hated them all at first. But I'm so used to them now that I have no problem finding anything on Mouser or Digikey quite quickly.
